At the #UNGA High Level Side Event on alcohol policy, Vital Strategies' Principal Technical Advisor Rebecca Perl presented the results of surveys conducted in 5️⃣ RESET focus countries: Brazil , Colombia, Kenya, Mexico and the Philippines. The polls showed that people endorsed fiscal policies, price increases and taxes in all countries surveyed as an effective way to reduce alcohol consumption. Thank you to @Movendi_Int, @UNICEF, @UNDP, @un_ncd and the Ministries of Health of Brazil, Ghana, Latvia and Lesotho for co-sponsoring this event to discuss the importance of the Global Alcohol Action Plan to meet the #SDGs.

Important read from @Movendi_Int: "The Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill in Uganda was effectively sabotaged by a combination of economic arguments, fear-mongering over illicit alcohol, and resistance to regulation from the alcohol industry." shorturl.at/6WlmJ

People in🇺🇬want health for their kids, families, communities. But #AlcoholHarms are escalating as alcohol companies push their harmful products on a young society. Big Alcohol has delayed the National #AlcoholPolicy for years. Now @Parliament_Ug helps them derail the alcohol law
The motion for the second reading of the Alcoholic Drinks (Control) Bill, 2023 has collapsed. House adjourned to tomorrow at 2.00p.m. #PlenaryUg

The rejection of the #AlcoholControlBill, 2023 by Parliament is deeply #concerning, especially considering the potential impact on young people. Without proper regulation, access to #alcohol becomes easier, increasing the risk of underage drinking and its associated #dangers.

Rejection of a public Health promotion law in Favour of money shows how much our MPs are detached from people's needs. One wonders whether they are happy to represent a sick and dying population
