Right. Now you're getting it. The only way to avoid more warming (allegedly) is to stop all FF use. That would collapse our civilisation. But not doing so would collapse our civilisation.

If I pay Elon for a blue check mark, do you think I could get as many retweets (500) for saying something sensible as Chris got for this transparent nonsense? (Ice sheets don’t melt instantly and the deep ocean doesn’t warm instantly.)

The idea that we can reverse climate change and planetary overshoot without some trauma for society is just magical thinking. LINK👇 artberman.com/blog/renewable… #energy #EnergyTransition #ClimateActionNow #renewables #NetZero #FossilFuels

The false claims of Sultan Al Jaber, the COP28 president, are a crisis of credibility for the COP talks and the UN. The UN and @antonioguterres must immediately, arrange a public debate between Sultan Al Jaber and leading climate scientists. theguardian.com/environment/… 1/4🧵

I’ll add that while I believe the stark counterpoint presented, it is my strong wish that serious thought be given to how the economy, climate and thermodynamic principles interrelate so that something more tolerable might be found. But that does mean relinquishing fairy tales

In a world sustained by combustion, even just maintaining the GDP at current levels accelerates CO2 emissions and the rise in concentrations. To stop this either: 1. We proactively collapse the economy now, or 2. Wait for climate change to do it for us later🧵

CCS is like Ozempic for an obese person @acranberg It's a way of avoiding the underlying problem. Our focus should be reducing energy consumption not finding ways to continue increasing it & using some palliative to pretend we are limiting its negative effects. #energy #EnergyTransition #ClimateActionNow #renewables #NetZero #FossilFuels

No question that fossil fuel underpins the creation of technology. But that doesnt gainsay the possibility that ccs could be transformed by new tech developments. Instead of ruling ccs out its potential should be (skeptically) welcomed.

I think what you are saying, is that the current system, the ideology, can't be sustainable. But the system, the overarching economic model, is not the same as our civilization. You are talking in riddles. Why don't you just say, the current economic model is not sustainable? 1/2

High climate sensitivity and a greater Faustian debt are a double whammy. We need to cool off the planet to maintain shorelines and a propitious climate. That requires a better understanding of the home planet and appropriate observations. See Home Planet: mailchi.mp/caa/to-understand…

Its hard to overstate just how exceptionally high global temperatures are at the moment. They have blown past anything we've previously experienced by a huge margin. Over at The Climate Brink, we try and visualize this summer of extremes in seven charts. theclimatebrink.com/p/visual…

"Economic growth can benefit both human welfare and the environment." It doesn't get more out of touch with reality, unless your version of reality doesn't include thermodynamics. We use energy to transform the stuff of the environment to the stuff of us, at its expense
I've always thought the degrowth crowd was a small group out of touch with reality, but it is apparently a large group out of touch with reality. Economic growth can benefit both human welfare and the environment. Poverty is not an option. theconversation.com/idea-of-…

Code UFB!!! In a year of weather records, yesterday was 0.92°C above the 1991-2020 mean and fully 1.75°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC baseline. Year-to-date the planet is now 1.37°C above the 1850-1900 baseline, with about a 50% chance to break the Paris limit for the year.

I feel like we expected climate change to be this gradual thing we'd be challenged to adjust to. Instead, it's more like a roving beast. We never know when it will strike, where, or even how, just that eventually it will come for us too
The fires in Hawaiʻi are shocking and horrific, and I appreciate the attention of the global media on my small state. I just wish when climate change fueled disasters strike areas in the global south, the media would show as much sustained interest.

We know that July has been exceptionally hot globally. But it’s now on track to shatter the prior July record (set in 2016) by a massive 0.38°C (0.31°C to 0.45°C) based on the month-to-date in JRA-55:

The conclusion is clear: carbon emissions and overshoot of planetary boundaries are unlikely to decrease as long as world GDP and population continue to increase. artberman.com/2023/06/21/cli… #energy #EnergyTransition #ClimateActionNow #renewables #NetZero

It is assumed that energy efficiency can limit energy consumption. Efficiency has always spurred energy consumption because energy is useful and now we have more to grow, ultimately leading to greater energy demands /5
