It's mixed. Some months are lower than 1998, some months are higher (in the UAH data set, which doesn't show surface temperatures). There have been other times of apparently falling temperatures but the trend continues up. xitter.cf/Veritatem2021/status/2…

Replying to @ryankatzrosene
Right. Now you're getting it. The only way to avoid more warming (allegedly) is to stop all FF use. That would collapse our civilisation. But not doing so would collapse our civilisation.

Not "expected" - only "possible" but unlikely (at this stage). No need to exaggerate what is already a crisis.
Global average temperature is expected to rise to almost 2C above preindustrial in the next five years, according to the WMO, with falls in crop yields and more than a third of the world’s population being exposed to extreme heat. People, we are in danger.

Now we've had 20 of the first 24 days of this month which have seen a record surface temperature for those days of a year. We're in a la Nina and temperature is in record territory. I'm hoping climate scientists will be able to explain this soon.

Fourteen of the first eighteen days of January 2025 have been the warmest of those particular days on record. This doesn't augur well for 2025 being cooler than last year.

They do on BlueSky.
How do none of the takes about the election mention what it means for the habitability of our planet? How?

23rd of October 2024 was the warmest 23rd of October recorded for the planet.

Yup, fossil fuels are dirtier. Few would argue otherwise. There is no such thing as a clean energy economy.

Just to be clear. Renewable energy is not going to save the planet.
#Solar PV technology via an ultra-thin material can be applied to “almost any building” and deliver over 27% conversion efficiency. New thin-film perovskite material uses multi-junction approach to generate increasing amounts of solar electricity without the need for silicon-based solar modules. #PV #climate pv-tech.org/oxford-uk-reveal…

They may want to do it quickly, @DoctorVive , but what people want doesn't necessarily relate to what's possible or how those wants may change if the consequences of removing all FFs are known (though that is definitely needed for all life on this planet).
According a recent @UN poll, 72% of the world's people want us to move away from fossil fuels quickly. As @SelwinHart points out to @fionaharvey, the perception that there's a climate backlash (belied by elections in France & the UK) is disinformation stoked by industry. 1/2

If I pay Elon for a blue check mark, do you think I could get as many retweets (500) for saying something sensible as Chris got for this transparent nonsense? (Ice sheets don’t melt instantly and the deep ocean doesn’t warm instantly.)

"– it will be clear that for all practical purposes the 1.5°C global warming level has been reached in the mid-2020s"
Jump of global temperature in past year is a combination of aerosol-induced warming over a few years and a half-baked El Nino. There is no need for new climate physics to understand the warming. El Nino + next La Nina mean may approach 1.5°C. See Hopium - mailchi.mp/caa/global-warmin…

But you're making a claim for which there is no evidence. In fact, the only evidence we have, that is related to your claim, shows that your claim is totally without merit and that what I claimed has merit.

It seems that @peterrhague has blocked me for explaining why his claim that we aren't even close to the carrying capacity of the solar system is wrong.
