National wealth tax? That is never going to happen. How about removing stepped-up basis and raising the Social Security taxable limit? Those would be easy ways to start. finance.yahoo.com/economy/ar…

Treasury revamped its results .pdf layout today; I'm not sure I like the new look. Also changed the link on the TreasuryDirect site, which means an extra click for me.

This week's auction of a new 5-year TIPS (CUSIP 91282CRR4) may be the ultimate conservative investment. The real yield will be near a two-decade high. My analysis: tipswatch.com/2026/10/18/thi…

Nearly two-thirds of builders said immigration enforcement is affecting their labor force, up from 23% in March and 13% a year ago, according to a September John Burns Research & Consulting survey. “We’re almost dead in the water because our workforce is gone,” said Scott Brannock, president of Jacksonville-based Tidewater Homes and the Northeast Florida Builders Association. “We have national builders who are missing projections, losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because they have slabs sitting on the ground and no one to frame.” wsj.com/us-news/the-immigrat…

It should seem obvious, but only a few AI mega-companies are going to succeed, and a lot are going to fail. High interest rates can get that rolling. "Something breaks." wsj.com/finance/stocks/the-r…

The inflation surge hasn't ended, and it fact might be in the early stages? The Fed can't be pleased by this report.
Oh dear. Sept PPI came in at 1.3% m/m, significantly above the est for 0.6% and the highest since March 2022, the first full month of the Russia-Ukraine war. And it wasn't just oil--without Energy's contribution, the m/m rate would have still been over 0.6%.

Three things to take from today's inflation numbers: the level is too high, the trend isn't improving, and it's worse than forecasters thought. That's about as cheerful as a wet weekend. newsletter.platypuseconomics…

This is a rough September inflation report. -Biggest monthly jump since May -Higher than expected inflation AND core inflation -Core Inflation for the past 3 months is running at well over a 3% annualized pace...that's problematic -Inflation (3.7%) totally wiping out wage gains (3%) Yes, high gas and diesel prices are the major driver, but also big jumps in airfares, used car prices, recreation, medical and apparel. The energy shock is spreading.

I've posted my analysis of the September inflation report, which set the I Bond's variable rate at 4.08% and Social Security COLA at 3.6%. tipswatch.com/2026/10/14/sep…

My calculation for the Social Security COLA for payments in 2027 is 3.6% -- which happens to be what I predicted back in July! (whoo-hoo).

Based on September inflation, the I Bond's new variable rate, to be reset Nov. 1, will be 4.08%. That is before adding the fixed rate, which will probably be at least 1.3%. I Bonds will be VERY POPULAR.

That variable rate will apply to all I Bonds ever issued. So even the 0.0% fixed-rate I Bonds will be paying 4.08% for six months.
