Hamzah Sheerez's recent decision showed that a fight like Hagler-Mugabi would never happen today. My latest column (a 'freebie'). You can subscribe to my Substack at stevekimboxing.substack.com #boxing Where Have You Gone Marvin Hagler? stevekimboxing.substack.com/…

How big was Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns? Even the tune-up fight (where both fought at the Astrodome) for SRL made the cover of Sports Illustrated (this was going 'viral' back then) Also, SRL moved UP in weight to face a world champion at 154 Both guys fought in late June -- and then clashed in September. Yeah, the game was different (and better) back then #boxing @MatthewAguilar5 @BreadmanBoxing @LymanPauli44654 @dougiefischer @MonteroOnBoxing @BruceTrampler

Week 0 is OK, but anyone miss the old Kickoff Classic games? The original was at the Meadowlands in Jersey. I went to the 1999 game between Miami and Ohio St. Then Disneyland had their version at Anaheim Stadium and I went to a few of them. They would usually have ranked teams playing one another from different parts of the country. It really felt like college football was back once those two games were played. Not sure how many teams want to play tough games any more right out of the game in non-conference settings.

Last night was far from the best fight I've seen, and far from the worst. It was....mediocre. It's emblematic of today's diluted sport When you've seen the likes of Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Hagler growing up, and then had the chance to cover the likes of De La Hoya, Trinidad, Mayweather, Pacquiao, the way I was fortunate enough to, this stuff will pale in comparison. It's just the way it is.. #boxing
