I left Moonshot by TechCabal more convinced than ever that Africa is building for now and the future. Over the course of the event, I got to see some of the ideas, products and ambitious solutions founders across the continent are putting forward for problems I did not even think needed solving. Beyond the creativity, the magnitude of the problems they are trying to solve and the scale of what some of these ideas could become was fascinating. One thing was particularly clear: AI is no longer a conversation reserved for technology companies. It is a central part of almost every industry from financial services and healthcare to commerce, education, agriculture and enterprise operations. The question is no longer if AI is here to stay but how we apply it meaningfully, where it can fill existing gaps, and how we use it to build solutions that work in our own context. Beyond the sessions, I appreciated the conversations with investors, founders and other people building across the ecosystem. Hearing different perspectives on sectors of interest, investment priorities, technological gaps and the opportunities ahead was genuinely valuable. Some of the conversations were insightful, some brutally honest like they were targeted at me, but all contributed to a better understanding of the work ahead. The genuine willingness to exchange ideas, share experiences, challenge assumptions and think together about what is possible was particularly encouraging. Africa has its challenges. We know that. But there is also an incredible amount of talent, ambition and ingenuity here. And most importantly, the infrastructure, network, capital, tools and support systems needed to help the next generation of African companies succeed are also being built. There is a lot of work ahead, but Africa is not sitting around waiting for the future. We are building it.
I’ll be at Moonshot 🚀 Looking forward to meeting founders, startup operators, builders, investors, and interesting people working on ambitious ideas across Africa. Always keen to exchange ideas, explore collaborations, and meet people building things worth paying attention to. If you’ll be there too, drop a comment or send me a DM let’s connect🤝

My friend's 23yo sister, Ewere, needs emergency brain surgery in South Korea. Her student insurance won't cover it & she's running out of time. I’ve donated. Please donate if you can, or RT to save her life. 🙏🏾 gofundme.com/f/urgent-surger…

In medicine, you don't order every test just to investigate. Your investigations are targeted. You investigate the likely causes and choose those that will improve patient management. Start-up operations deserve the same discipline. Don't copy a process just because a bigger company uses it. Diagnose the problem. Build the smallest system that addresses it. Then re-evaluate. Diagnose before prescribing. What's one process you've seen a startup introduce too early?

A founder starts a company with a big vision. He hires a team to fill every role. Build out departments. Subscribe to a dozen tools. Introduce processes, meetings and approval layers. But the product hasn't been validated, distribution is still an afterthought, and revenue is not even in sight. A few months later, cash is running low. Now he’s wondering why operations are so expensive and whether they needed all that structure in the first place. The problem isn't that he built an operating structure, It is that they built one for the company they dream of, not the company they actually had. While too little structure creates chaos, too much creates unnecessary bureaucracy, slows decisions and consumes resources that should be going toward validation, customers and growth. A startups operating structure should fit its current stage, available resources and long-term ambition. Build enough structure to clarify ownership, make execution repeatable, and support growth. Add more layers as the business scales. Operations should create capacity, not become another burden the startup has to carry. This is the work I care about: helping founders diagnose what is working, identify operational waste, and build the right infrastructure for where their startup is today, and where they want to take it. If your operations feel heavier than they should, let's talk. You may not need more structure, just the right one.

“Too many chefs spoil the food”. This is a common saying, and startups aren’t exempt. When everyone is responsible, no one really owns the outcome. RACI is one of the simplest ways to fix this: Who does it? Who owns it? Who needs to be consulted? Who needs to know? Clarity is an operating system.

Most founders run a feasibility study and leave it at that: can we build it? Is there demand? can it make money? These are good questions for a start. The part that gets skipped is the operational study: can the business keep working when the founder is unavailable? Brett Sutherlin, CEO of Sutherlin Automotive in one of his article spoke about his first tech company. He stayed in execution too long, still closing deals and managing sales while the business scaled. His takeaway was that the habits that built the early wins were the same ones capping growth later. He says it shows up in small ways first: decisions stacking up, teams waiting on approvals, opportunities moving slower than the market. Then it gets obvious. He wasn’t speeding the company up anymore, he was “holding it at its current speed.” That’s what I mean by operational readiness. If every decision, payment exception, customer complaint or handoff still needs you, the model isn’t ready to scale. So test the operating system before you scale the product. Step out for a week, see what breaks, and fix that first. Feasibility tells you if the idea works. Operations tells you if the business does.
