AI is increasingly becoming part of everyday life across Africa.But as AI tools become more common, people with disabilities risk being left out because the disability data needed to build AI that reflects their experiences is limited and fragmented across Africa. This can mean navigation apps that struggle with African environments and local contexts, and AI tools with limited support for African sign languages. Across Africa, disability data is fragmented and poorly mapped, with major gaps in African sign languages and speech data involving people with disabilities. Over the next year, a new initiative, the Hub for AI and Disability Inclusion (HAIDI), alongside the African Disability Data Network (ADDN), will map existing disability data and develop new datasets for areas including sign language, health, and employment.
