100 years ago, Jewish American veterans marched through their own neighborhoods to defend their communities from rising hate. Today, a new generation of CSS volunteers is answering that same call, standing watch at hundreds of synagogues, community events and on mobile patrols across the country. Three years ago today, on October 7, 2023, the world changed in a single morning. That morning, approximately 6,000 Hamas and other terrorists from Gaza invaded southern Israel. They murdered more than 1,200 men, women and children and took 251 hostages to Gaza in the deadliest single day for Jews since the Holocaust. CSS remembers the victims, stands with the survivors and remains more committed than ever to protecting Jewish life and Jewish way of life.

On September 20, during Yom Kippur services, Constable Jeff Smith of the Belleville Police Service was stationed outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario. When an armed assailant opened fire, Smith engaged and stopped the threat about half a block from the Synagogue. Constable Smith was critically wounded, and no one inside the synagogue was harmed. CSS salutes his courage and prays for his full and speedy recovery. His actions remind us how the partnership between law enforcement and the community keeps Jewish life safe. #CSS #JewishSecurity #ProtectJewishLife

CSS volunteers provided on-the-ground security for the Jewish Graduate Organization's Summit in Washington, D.C. last weekend. In addition, CSS trainers taught self-defense and security awareness classes to nearly two dozen Jewish graduate students, giving them practical self-defense skills they can carry into their own communities and campuses. Thank you to the great volunteers who kept this event safe, and to the students stepping up to learn how they can protect themselves and their peers on campus. #CSS #JewishSecurity #ProtectJewishLife #Fightingantisemitism #volunteer #campus

Chuck Berkowitz comes from a tradition of service. Growing up, Chuck's grandfather rarely talked about his time in the service. Like a lot of men of his generation, he came home, put his uniform away and went back to work. But he never put away his Jewish War Veterans membership card. Chuck did not fully understand what that card meant until he was an adult, wearing a United States Army uniform of his own. Today Chuck is part of the CSS team that puts boots on the ground to protect Jewish institutions and events across the country. CSS is the only organization in the United States with this capability, and it carries on the tradition of Jewish community security that started with organizations like the Jewish War Veterans. #CSS #JewishSecurity #ProtectJewishLife

Thank you, Chief Andrew McGurr, and congratulations, Deputy Chief Seth Kriegel! Community Security Service (CSS) extends our deepest gratitude to Chief McGurr for 33 years of dedicated service to the @TeaneckPD and the entire Teaneck community. We are privileged to have worked closely with Chief McGurr on countless communitywide events and to secure our local houses of worship. He has always been supportive, professional and deeply committed to keeping Teaneck a safe and welcoming community. Teaneck is extraordinarily fortunate to have had his decades of leadership. Congratulations on your retirement, Chief McGurr. Thank you for everything you've done for Teaneck and its residents. We are thrilled to congratulate Deputy Chief Kriegel on being selected as Teaneck's next Police Chief. CSS has built an outstanding relationship with Deputy Chief Kriegel during his many years with the Teaneck Police Department. We have tremendous respect for his professionalism, leadership, and commitment to protecting our community, and we are excited to continue working with him in his new role. Congratulations, Chief McGurr and Deputy Chief Kriegel. Thank you both for helping to make Teaneck the safe and beautiful community that it is, and we look forward to continuing to work with Chief Kriegel as he takes the department into its next chapter.

We mourn the passing of Abraham Foxman, z”l. A Holocaust survivor who came to America and dedicated his life to fighting antisemitism, he was a towering voice and a powerful advocate for defending the Jewish people. May his memory be a blessing.
