Today, we proudly celebrated the co-naming of East 47th Street and Second Avenue as Jewish Community Relations Council of New York Way, marking JCRC-NY’s 50th anniversary! As so many shared today, this is about more than a street sign. It recognizes the lasting mark the Jewish community has made on New York City—and the deep bond between a community that has helped shape this city for generations and a city that has given so much to Jewish New Yorkers in return. Located across from Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, a historic gathering place for JCRC-NY, this street honors five decades of bringing Jewish New Yorkers and civic leaders together to stand with Israel, respond to October 7, and speak out against antisemitism. A special thank-you to City Council @SpeakerMenin and Council Member @vmmaloney for making this recognition possible, and to our incredible partners at @UJAfedNY for their continued support. Thank you to all the elected officials, community partners, board members, and friends who celebrated with us! Here’s to 50 years of building bridges and a stronger New York City for all.

Bensonhurst teens are getting out the vote! 🗳️ On Monday, JCRC-NY teamed up with @MarksJCHB for a day of teen civic engagement. After a training with our team, 30 teens from the Marks JCH Connect 4 program fanned out across south Brooklyn, from pizza counters to ice cream shops to laundromats, asking local businesses to help mobilize their neighbors by hanging our GOTV posters (in English, Russian, and Spanish!) in their windows and leaving flyers by the register. And they’re just getting started: on October 25, these same teens will run a phone bank encouraging voters to cast their ballots early at a local polling site. 📞 Your voice matters. Early voting runs October 24 to November 1, and Election Day is November 3. Find voting resources at jcrcny.org/vote. Thank you to @UJAfedNY for their partnership in this work. 💙 #GOTV #VoteEarly #Brooklyn #Bensonhurst #CivicEngagement #UnitingCommunities

We appreciate NYC Comptroller @MarkLevineNYC 's thoughtful statement reaffirming his deep personal connection to Israel, his commitment to honoring his promises, including his pledge to renew support for Israel Bonds, and the importance of the New York–Israel relationship. With approximately $285 million invested in Israeli equities, NYC pension funds reflect an enduring relationship that benefits New Yorkers economically, culturally, and in countless other ways. Sound financial stewardship and a strong New York–Israel relationship can and should go hand in hand.
The economic relationship between New York City and Israel is deeply important, bringing substantial investment into our city and generating strong returns for our pension funds. Our funds invest around the world, including more than $285 million in Israel, primarily in equities. Israel remains one of the world’s most dynamic and innovative economies, and those holdings remain an important part of our portfolio. They also make clear that New York City’s pension funds are not engaging in BDS. I expressed my deep appreciation for the Israel-NYC economic relationship during my campaign for comptroller, and that appreciation remains unchanged. I also pledged to make every investment decision free of politics, based solely on its financial merits and my fiduciary responsibility to 750,000 current and future retirees. We apply those same principles to Israel Bonds. At present, a number of challenges, including constraints related to a rules change on our short-term investment desk made by the previous comptroller, prevent us from making direct purchases. We continue to evaluate this investment, as we do all potential investments. Anyone suggesting that this means I am giving up on Israel is trying to turn the ordinary rebalancing and management of a pension portfolio into a political issue. That is simply not the case. Our commitment to investing in Israel remains clear in the hundreds of millions of dollars in Israeli equities that our pension funds continue to hold. Like many Jewish New Yorkers, my deep personal connection to Israel is a part of who I am. It will not change. As New York City comptroller, I also have a solemn duty to safeguard our city’s pension funds, and I will not shirk that responsibility. I will continue to honor both commitments with integrity.

Honored to welcome Daniel Sharabi, a survivor of the October 7 Nova massacre, to JCRC-NY. Through LaNizolim, Daniel is turning unimaginable trauma into purpose, helping fellow survivors heal. Learn more about his work here: lanizolim.co.il/en/home/ Survival is only the beginning. No survivor should face the journey of healing alone. Grateful to JCRC-NY Board Member Eric Aroesty for helping organize, and to UJA-Federation, Assembly Member Jeffrey Dinowitz, and our community partners for joining us.

In his statement marking the 3rd anniversary of the October 7th terrorist attack on Israel, the first anniversary in which all the hostages are finally home or buried, Mayor Mamdani @NYCMayor dashed off four sentences acknowledging the tragedy of that day, without ever mentioning that the targets were Jewish, before pivoting back to his preferred narrative, spending the bulk of his remarks on the events that transpired afterwards. Let us be clear Mr. Mayor: it does not honor the dead to pit them in a contest against each other. It is shameful. Today Jewish New Yorkers across the 5 boroughs walked through metal detectors to drop off our children at preschool, thanked the police officers posted outside our synagogues for keeping us safe, tucked in our Jewish stars on the subway, and felt the gut punch of grief remembering the 1,200 innocent people who were slaughtered in their homes, in front of their families, and dancing at a music festival just because they were Jewish. The Mayor’s role is to bring people together for the good of all New Yorkers, and he continues to fall short of that goal. None of this is normal and we refuse to accept it.

Three years, and our hearts are still broken. We remember every life taken on October 7th, 2023. We carry their names, their light, and their stories with us, today and always. May their memories be a blessing. We also hold close the families who lost loved ones, the survivors, the former hostages and their families, and all who still carry the weight of that day. May they find strength, comfort, and healing. Am Yisrael Chai.

Two fiestas, one shared spirit! This Sukkot, during Hispanic Heritage Month, Jewish and Latino neighbors came together in Manhattan and on Long Island. On Wednesday evening, JCRC-NY and the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood co-hosted Fiesta Sukkot. Over 50 Jewish, Latino, and Jewish Latino community members gathered in a beautiful sukkah at the Y, where we also honored Congressman Adriano Espaillat for his years of dedication to the wellbeing of all communities. Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are here! 🕊️📜 Shemini Atzeret comes right after Sukkot, and though it's connected to the Sukkot season, it stands as its own holiday, marking an additional sacred day of gathering and reflection. Right alongside it is Simchat Torah, a joyful holiday celebrating the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle and the start of a new one. Stay tuned for more posts explaining these important high holy days!
