Privacy regulations require consent to use tracking “cookies." This MSI working paper uses an online field experiment to determine how consumers respond to different cookie consent banner designs. Which design would work best for you?: ow.ly/qVZB50YfgzF #Tracking #Privacy

Are you an acceptor, discerner, or rejector? by Chiara Farronato, @AndreyFradkin and @TesaryLin
📌The purpose of the study is to measure how different #cookie-consent designs affect user welfare and identify which consent model saves consumers the most time and money.
* Acceptor (45%) — People who click “Accept all” everywhere. They like convenience and don’t mind sharing data.
* Discerner (37%) — They decide case by case, choosing differently depending on the website.
* Rejector (18%) — They almost always choose “Reject all” and dislike #data sharing.
📌Hidden buttons matter: When “Reject all” is buried under “Settings,” users are heavily nudged toward accepting.
📌Best policy for consumers: Browser-level privacy control saves the most time and money — far better than any banner redesign.

In our new working paper, we study how to design consent mechanisms for data collection. TLDR; instead of focusing on the specific consent interface, we should focus on the frequency of consent decisions and default sharing rules.

@TesaryLin showcased the bias vs volume tradeoff in using frames to encourage consumers to share their data with companies.
Key idea: value of privacy is correlated with responsiveness to the frame of the ask, and that has an impact on the composition of data collected.
Junior Faculty Forum organized by WUSTL started with a brilliant presentation by @ZhenlingJ
Paper will revolutionize structural work!
Idea: Use simulated data from a model to train an estimator and then use that to estimate structural parameters from data in seconds.
