I visited a cold, windy, Welney yesterday, hoping to see the Red-crested Pochard that had recently arrived. It took a focussed hour scanning to find, finally drifting out of its distant reedy hideout before sailing right below me at Lyle Hide. Phew, what a cracker of a quacker!

A thoroughly uplifting day up the coast. The snow threatened to ruin things at one stage but in the end it proved to be a real bonus. Thanks to the @Westleton_Crown for saving the day at lunchtime!
Great to catch up with friends in a snowy Suffolk today. Highlights were Temminck's Stint, Spotted Redshank, Bittern, Water Pipit and Snow Buntings in the snow. @DavidWalsh22 @Elliott81758817 @TSbirding

Met up with @TSbirding & Lucas Burfield + families at @RSPBMinsmere today. The morning’s birding was solid & we enjoyed lunch at the cafe. Moments after I had said that a ‘moment of magic’ was needed, this White Stork appeared, to everyone’s delight! We saw 80+ species in total.

A superb second day in The Netherlands with @tmssearch @TSbirding. At Lelystad Natuurparc we found roosting Long-eared Owls, as well as Willow Tits & Hawfinches. Later the White-tailed Eagle spectacle at Oostvaardersplassen was unreal. 18 seen in one scan, 8 in one field of view.

A friend said ‘well done, now get the t shirt’. I hadn’t realised that was a possibility, but the bird info shop in De Cocksdorp has realised the potential and is onto the second batch!

On Texel our supporting cast birds were Hen Harrier, Smew, Tundra Bean Goose. We then drifted back to Alkmaar where this Baikal Teal (my second ever, anywhere) showed amazingly. A displaying Black-tailed Godwit and drake Ring-necked Duck in a roadside channel rounded things off.

A real privilege to be offered the chance to head to The Netherlands on a short break with @tmssearch @TSbirding. Bumped into @SBO_Jason on Texel; fortunately he found the Spectacled Eider before we got frostbite! It was a bit warmer when we returned later. What a bird!

These are some of the 24 Lesser White-fronted Geese, from the Swedish reintroduction scheme, that are currently visiting Snettisham Coastal Park in NW Norfolk. Seven appear to be metal and colour-ringed, though the majority aren’t ringed, including five 2CY birds.

Hemmed in by fog and traffic on the M25 en route home from Cornwall, the thought of connecting with the Yellow Warbler seemed a dim and distant prospect. However it showed beautifully this afternoon and so did the Scops Owl at Broadstairs! Nice to see @RobsBirding and @TSbirding.

Very blustery day @WWTWelney today. Highlight was the drake American Wigeon from Reedbed Hide which was as distant as it possibly could be. Nice to see my first Bewick’s swans of the year with 3 from the main observatory. Good to see @TSbirding too! Pic: Bewick’s swan (circled)

An unexpected visitor greeted me on return from work this evening. He was having a mega time nibbling on the plants in the garden pond! Weirdly the second record tufted duck on the pond.
