Sami's post betrays documented historical and demographic record. East Pakistan was created in 1947 as the eastern wing of a state explicitly founded on the two-nation theory after the failure of Hindu-Muslim political accommodation in Bengal. The immediate background included the 1946 Calcutta Killings and Noakhali riots, followed by large-scale migration. In 1941, Hindus were roughly 28% of the population in the territory that became East Pakistan. By the 1951 census they were about 22%; by 1961, around 18.4–19%; by 1974, roughly 13.5%; and by the 2022 census, 7.95%. Absolute Hindu numbers stagnated or grew slowly while the overall and Muslim populations rose rapidly. The difference is explained by a higher Muslim TFR (conversely, lower Hindu TFR), but more importantly, by sustained out-migration of Hindus. That out-migration was not abstract. It was driven by recurrent violence and state measures. Major episodes include the 1950 riots, the 1964 East Pakistan riots (sparked by the Hazratbal shrine incident in Kashmir; Hindu homes, businesses, and temples were attacked in places such as Khulna, Jessore, Dhaka, and Narayanganj, producing a large refugee flow into India), and the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Then there was the Enemy Property Act that allowed the seizure of property belonging to people deemed “enemies” - in practice disproportionately Hindus. Then came 1971, with further targeted killing of Hindus and major out-migration. Studies estimate millions of Hindus left between the mid-1960s and onwards. A single piece of October 1965 government-shot footage of Durga Puja (with added modern music) can accurately show that mixed crowds sometimes attended the festival and that everyday local coexistence existed in many places. However, it does not erase the broader pattern of insecurity, episodic pogroms, discriminatory property laws, and the resulting sharp, multi-decade decline in the Hindu share of the population. That demographic trajectory is one of the clearer available measures of the minority community’s lived experience. Local festival participation and structural pressures on the minority are/were not mutually exclusive. The need to publicly affirm and historicize the harmony, while simultaneously identifying and dismissing counter-narratives, is itself evidence that the claim is contested rather than self-evident. Sami’s post does two things at once: it presents 1965 footage and present-day Puja participation as proof of organic, soil-grown coexistence that, and it anticipates and rejects those who “want to tell a different story” and “manufacture new ones for their own ends.” When a claim requires these, is already operating in a space where the asserted reality is not obvious. The rhetorical move of insisting the harmony is natural and pre-political, while warning against manufactured counter-stories, functions as an attempt to set the terms of what counts as the real Bangladesh. This pattern is common wherever minority status and majority self-image are in tension. The post’s own framing - that the harmony “is still who we are” and will prevail against those who pick and choose - reveals awareness that the narrative is under pressure. If the coexistence were as continuous, unforced, and definitional as claimed, the defensive reconstruction would be unnecessary. Sustained, non-imposed coexistence requires that the parties involved can name the pressures and wrongs that shaped the present distribution of power, numbers, and security. When an account of “who we are” treats recorded facts of large scale communal injustices as peripheral or as the work of a few outsiders who “manufacture” stories, while elevating selected festival footage as the defining continuity, it effectively asks the minority to set those experiences aside so that the majority self-image can remain undisturbed. That selective framing is what makes the harmony claim feel imposed.
This footage from October 1965 was shot by a Government of Pakistan camera crew in what was then East Pakistan and later catalogued by Hearst Metrotone News in New York. The index card describes it simply: "Durga Puja, the greatest religious festival of the members of the Hindu community, celebrated throughout East Pakistan." Look at the faces in the crowd. Children, drummers, men in lungis and women in sarees, neighbours of every faith standing shoulder to shoulder to watch the celebration. Sixty one years on, that is still who we are. Puja pandals lit up all across Bangladesh with Muslim neighbours sharing the prasad and the joy. This harmony was not imported and it was not imposed. It grew out of our soil, our music, our rivers and our shared memory, long before 1971 and long before any of us were born. There will always be a few who want to tell a different story, who pick and choose for themselves and manufacture new ones for their own ends, from inside the country and from outside it. They have tried throughout and have failed, and will fail. Bangladesh is not built on their narrative, and it never will be. To my Hindu friends, and to everyone who finds joy in these days: may this Puja bring you peace and courage. Note: The archived footage from October 1965 carries no sound. The music has been added to this video. Source: Hearst Metrotone News Collection, UCLA Film & Television Archive, unreleased material.

Radical Islamists are on the rise again in Bangladesh. Despite clear evidence circulating on social media showing mob violence and killers celebrating their crimes, the BNP government’s police have yet to arrest a single perpetrator.
Radical Islamist fury rages across Bangladesh: Inside hospital Islamists mob tortured mentally challenged youth to death over ridiculous blasphemy charges Independent report reveals, a 38 year Waziduzzaman Shamim has become yet another victim who fell prey to the Islamist rage. With pre announcement his killers beaten him to death in several of phases over fictitious blasphemy changes. And appeased the mob instead of standing for a citizen’s right to life. First the unruly fanatic Islamist mob held him captive and beaten him ruthlessly in Southern Bangladesh village on Tuesday. Then again after cops shifted him to hospital the Islamist savages stormed into the hospital, grabbed him from bed and kept beating him to ensure his death. Months before Dipu Das, another youth, was beaten and burnt to death over blasphemy charges. Over last two years, Independent minority rights bodies documented an unprecedented rise in persecution of minority youths outrageous blasphemy cases. For those western countries and UN officials who packaged the rise of Islamist extremists including Jamaat e Islami as democratic forces in Bangladesh and advocated for so called reform, these brutal killings blew ourt their outright hypocrisy, a damning indictment to Jamaat’s brazen advocacy for Islamist rule with total impunity from law enforcement, earlier spearheaded by Yunus regime. #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis

People Trapped in a Web of Cases: 67% of Prisoners Remain Unsentenced! —— More than 106,000 people are currently in prison. Yet nearly 67 percent of them have not been sentenced. If people have to go to prison before being found guilty, then where is the justice? Bangladesh’s prisons have a total capacity of 45,186 inmates. Yet nearly 106,000 people are currently behind bars — 226 prisoners for every 100 places. This is in terms of overcrowding relative to prison capacity. Bangladesh ranks among the highest in South Asia. Since August 5, 2024, Awami League leaders and activists have been arrested one after another. Thousands of people are being sent to prison after being arrested in what are described as politically motivated cases. The most alarming fact is that nearly two out of every three prisoners have not yet been convicted. Yet they remain behind bars. Medical care is inadequate, while the quality of food is also very poor. Prisoners spend day after day waiting for bail. For those who remember the period from 2001 to 2006, this picture is not unfamiliar. If Awami League leaders and activists are sent to prison before their guilt has been established, then is this justice — or punishment before a verdict? Because if imprisonment itself becomes a punishment before a court delivers its verdict, the question inevitably arises: Who is this justice actually for? #HumanRights #AwamiLeague #Bangladesh

Jamaat’s Cultural War: Targeting Rabindranath Tagore and Bangladesh’s National Identity — As Jamaat e Islami ameer embarked on a visit to Turkey, its foot soldiers in Bangladesh further stepped up ongoing cultural genocide to erase Bangladesh’s cultural icons who are recognised by the world as symbol of tolerance and peace. In addition, the polymath, Rabindranath’a lyrics was adopted as the national anthem in 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation War (officially declared on January 13, 1972). supporters of Jamaat, doubled down on erasing the legacy of patriotism using the facade of anti Indian sentiment. As part of the plan, self styled handful of so called revolutionaries painted black ink on Rabindranath’s painting only to be faced with resistance. For five decades his written anthem inspired millions of Bangladeshis instilling a sense of patriotism but abhorred by war criminals from Jamaat e Islami that committed genocide in 1971 with pak army. But after the regime change in 2024, son of notorious war criminal Abdullahil Azmi publicly called for changing the national anthem, drawing flak from millions of liberals. Weeks earlier, these pro Islamists also sought to glorify Muhammad Ali Jinnah by installing his photo but later removed in face of public outburst. #Bangladesh

Bangladeshi authorities must immediately drop charges against journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Haque and protect freedom of expression and media freedom, in line with Bangladesh's international human rights obligations. Freedom of expression protects information and opinions that may offend, shock or disturb. Arresting journalists for their reporting, even if disagreeable, violates that right and threatens media freedom.

The decision today by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to issue production warrants against the Ekattor host Farzana Rupa, the Ekattor TV managing director Mozammel Babu and the Awami League politician Dipu Moni - in relation to their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity arising from the Hefazat-e-Islami deaths of May 2013, known as the Shapla Chattar case - is very troubling indeed. So too is its earlier warrant against the activist Shahriar Kabir. Before explaining why, it is important to note that it is entirely legitimate for the ICT to consider the May 2013 killings as a possible crime against humanity; the deaths can quite plausibly be characterised as forming part of a "systematic attack against a civilian population". That said, prosecutors face a significant evidential challenge: to succeed, they must establish that the killings were carried out pursuant to a pre-existing policy or plan on the part of the government. That may be difficult to prove — and indeed may not reflect what actually occurred The deeper concern, however, lies elsewhere. The statements made by Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim in court on Thursday, and by Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam to the media, suggest that the ICT is proceeding on two legal theories that are without foundation in international criminal law: (a) that ordinary journalistic practice - broadcasting speeches and critically analysing, or indeed condemning their content - can amount to aiding and abetting a crime against humanity; and (b) that efforts made after the killings to minimise or deny their scale can amount to criminal involvement in a crime against humanity. On point (a): According to The Business Standard, Prosecutor Tamim claimed that journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu had, "from the very beginning," broadcast the Hefazat-e-Islam rally through Ekattor Television as "provocative speeches." There is nothing remotely criminal in that. Hefazat-e-Islami holds views well outside the mainstream in Bangladesh. Several of their thirteen demands - including prohibiting the mixing of men and women and imposing the death penalty for blasphemy - were, and remain, widely regarded as extreme. It was lawful for journalists and broadcasters to report on and critically scrutinise those demands (even if it was done in a biased or prejudiced manner deserving criticism from a TV ethics perspective.) Critically, there is no evidence that anything broadcast on ETV during the rally incited or called upon the government to use lethal force against those present. On point (b): According to the Business Standard, Prosecutor Tamim told the tribunal that Dipu Moni, who served as Foreign Minister at the time of the Shapla Chattar killings on 5 May 2013, had "internationally portrayed" the events as law enforcement agencies having "eliminated a group of unruly people." Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam separately alleged to journalists that Babu and Rupa had attempted to conceal the true scale of the killings, sought to divert public attention from them, and had broadcast a programme - hosted by Rupa - that spread misleading information creating the impression that no casualties had occurred at Shapla Chattar. Islam further alleged that the programme featured statements from "controversial individuals" and was designed to steer public perception away from the actual events. The legal difficulty with all of this is straightforward: every act attributed to Moni, Babu, and Rupa took place after the killings, not before or during them. There is no established case in the entire history of international criminal law - not at the ICC, the ICTY, the ICTR, or any equivalent tribunal - in which a person has been prosecuted for crimes against humanity on the basis of having denied or minimised an atrocity after the fact. The law does not permit it. However morally indefensible it may be, denial of a crime against humanity is not, in itself, a crime against humanity. In issuing warrants against Moni, Babu, and Rupa on this basis - where there is no evidence connecting them to the actual commission of the underlying offences - the ICT is, arguably, not applying international criminal law. Rather, it seems to be departing from it.

The Pakistan Army is an army of rapists and perpetrators of genocide—the most brutal and barbaric army in the world. On this day in 1971, one of the most brutal incidents of violence against women in history took place at Rokeya Hall, University of Dhaka. There is also a mass grave there, where around 60–70 people were killed and buried by Pakistani forces. A report sent by the U.S. Consul General to the U.S. State Department during the Liberation War, later published in 2002 as part of declassified documents, mentioned accounts from a businessman (not affiliated with the Awami League). According to the report, several female students were found dead, indicating they had been subjected to severe abuse before being killed. From The Cruel Birth of Bangladesh by Archer K. Blood, it is known that Rokeya Hall was set on fire. When female students tried to escape the flames, Pakistani forces reportedly opened fire indiscriminately. Communication records between military units suggested that approximately 300 students may have been killed. According to the book on the Liberation War by Rafiqul Islam, on the night of November 10, 1971, armed Pakistani soldiers and their collaborators entered Rokeya Hall. They carried out attacks on around 30 female students, looted belongings, and several victims required emergency medical treatment afterward. A report published in the Pakistani English daily Dawn on November 11, 1971, titled “Dacca hostel girls robbed,” described an armed attack on Rokeya Hall, where assailants terrorized students and staff for about two hours. Testimonies documented in Volume 8 of Documents of the Liberation War, edited by Hasan Hafizur Rahman, include accounts from a municipal worker who was sent to remove bodies from Rokeya Hall in March 1971 after reports of a strong smell. He described finding multiple victims in different locations within the hall and surrounding areas. In Days Trapped in Pakistan by Nurul Islam Khan, a letter recounts the experience of a Bangladeshi student who met a woman claiming to be a former Rokeya Hall student. She stated that she and many others had been taken to Pakistan and were being subjected to severe exploitation. She appealed for help and justice. History shows that whenever oppression has occurred, the women of Rokeya Hall have been among the first to resist and break free. They are resilient and unyielding. ( AI TRANSLATION)

The @LemkinInstitute stands in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh on this Genocide Day commemoration. We call for the universal recognition of the Bangladesh case and for accountability for the perpetrators in Pakistan and for those states, such as the USA, who were deeply complicit in this crime.

A stage was vandalized during a Baul music performance in Rampasha, Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet. Baul music is an inseparable part of Bangladesh’s folk culture and heritage. This act of vandalism proves that our culture and traditions are still under threat. The mob culture that fascist Yunus has spread across the country appears to be continuing under the BNP government. The soulful tunes of Baul music, played with instruments like the ektara and dotara, are a core part of Bangladesh’s identity. As long as Bangladesh exists, Baul music will endure—and one day, this world will belong to the Bauls. #Bangladesh #HumanRights #StopViolence #JusticeForAll #SpeakUp #EndViolence #Bangladesh #BNP #LawAndOrder #HumanRights #Justice #Bangladesh @amnesty @hrw @fidh_en @ICRC @UNHumanRights @Reuters @AP @BBCWorld @AJEnglish @justiceinfonet @amnestysasia @AgnesCallamard @ESandersFCDO @PearsonElaine @meeganguly @volker_turk @OHCHRAsia @SRjudgeslawyers @IBAHRI @IBAnews @FCDOHumanRights @EURightsAgency @StateDRL @DoughtyStIntl @Chellaney #Bangladesh #HumanRights
