.@StuartMilk told me he was on board the USNS Harvey Milk - to be renamed for Oscar Peterson - for three days and "no one expressed [to me] anything but pride in the fact" they served on the ship. "My uncle's legacy will live well past the 40 year life" of the Milk, he said.

I was with my mom @NancyGBrinker when she spoke at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, patriot, and symbol of hope. I watched with pride as she stood with @StuartMilk to honor a legacy that has always transcended politics. Stripping his name is a slap in the face — cruel, unnecessary, and wrong. We’re fools to think a stronger military can’t also be a diverse one.
I was honored to speak at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, a patriot, and a symbol of courage and hope. Stripping his name from this ship isn’t just petty — it’s an insult to our history and to all who’ve fought for equality. We cannot erase what Harvey stood for. @StuartMilk

Today would have been Harvey Milk’s 95th birthday.
In 1976, he met Jimmy Carter on the campaign trail in California. Two years later, after Gay Freedom Day, he wrote to President Carter—calling on him to defend gay rights.

I am deeply troubled by Hungary’s assault on fundamental freedoms with its ban on Pride events and expanded surveillance targeting the LGBTQ community. Having traveled to Hungary with Stuart Milk -- who accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of his uncle, Harvey Milk, at the same 2009 ceremony where I was honored -- together, we saw firsthand the courage of those fighting for equality in the face of oppression. As both an Ambassador and private citizen, I have long supported democratic values and human rights in Hungary. I know this law is a betrayal of the freedoms Hungarians aspire to uphold. We must stand in unwavering solidarity with those fighting for the dignity of all.

Proud to welcome the USNS Harvey Milk, the supply ship named for our iconic LGBTQ Navy veteran, “home” to San Francisco before its journey to Norfolk, VA — and to salute our servicemembers, particularly Vietnam-era veterans, on the eve of Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Day. -NP

To the people of western Prince William County, the City of Manassas Park and the City of Manassas: I’m so grateful to continue serving my lifelong home community, now in the state Senate.
Thank you so, so much. It’s time to get back to work!

ALT “I’m grateful the people of Virginia's 30th Senate district elected me to continue representing my lifelong home of western Prince William County and greater Manassas. The voters have shown they want a leader who will prioritize fixing roads, feeding kids, and protecting our land instead of stigmatizing trans kids or taking away your civil rights.

Each of this year’s honorees are exemplars of what it means to be a public servant. From advocating for policies to support LGBTQ+ business owners to opening legal clinics at battered women’s shelters and beyond, these folks have put in years of work in service of the LGBTQ+ community.
Congratulations to the 2023 Honorees Cory Allen, Karel Bouley, Andrew Howard, Charlotte “Charlie” Cornett, Tom Crowe, Carol Hass, and Debra Kahookele.

Did you know that Senator Dianne Feinstein's journey into politics was profoundly influenced by the tragic assassination of gay rights activist and City Supervisor Harvey Milk?
In 1978, she witnessed the heart-wrenching loss of Milk, a beloved San Francisco Supervisor, and Mayor George Moscone, to an act of senseless violence, and she even tried unsuccessfully to save Milk's life.
This shocking event shook Feinstein to her core, igniting a fire within her to make lasting change.
Motivated by a deep sense of duty and a commitment to honor Milk's legacy, Feinstein embarked on a path that led her to run for Mayor of San Francisco.
In 1979, she became the first woman Mayor of San Francisco, determined to heal a grieving city and to fight for the values Milk held dear - equality, justice, and inclusion.
But Feinstein's remarkable journey didn't stop there. She carried her determination to Capitol Hill, where she championed the cause of gun control with unwavering resolve.
The memory of Milk's assassination and the need to prevent such tragedies fueled her dedication to pass the assault weapons ban in 1994.
In her passing today, Feinstein's legacy stands as a testament to the enduring impact of one person's commitment to change, catalyzed by a tragic event that touched her heart and inspired her to lead with courage and conviction.
Rest in Power, Senator Feinstein. 🙏

When an entire auditorium of people are booing you for telling the truth, you find out who are your friends & standup individuals. Kris Kristofferson standing alone on stage with you as insults rained down is still a moment of tender humanity.
Rest in peace, Sister Sinead.
