Education academics seem to think that invoking the word "neoliberal" is a killer argument against anything they don't like. The authors of this critique of AERO lasted all of 3 sentences before bringing it up.
It's such a poor line of argument. If you're going to argue against evidence then use better evidence, not ideology. blog.aare.edu.au/aero-says-e…

Primary maths has long been the 'poor cousin' of literacy. This has left too many schools and teachers without enough support to boost students' progress in maths.
It’s time to get serious about primary maths. Our new report shows how.

The decoding threshold is an important nuance to the simple view of reading. SVR suggests improvement in either decoding or listening comprehension (LC) improves reading comprehension (RC). Unfortunately if decoding falls below a certain level increases in LC do not improve RC.

There's compelling evidence of a "decoding threshold." If students in upper elementary and middle school fall below it, they stop making progress in reading no matter how much support for comprehension they receive.
