History catches up with the education establishment in this important Season 2 of Sold a Story. Meaningful education advances could have been made in the last 50 years, as has occurred in other fields, where evidence is weighed more carefully and objectively. But they weren’t, and socioeconomic status continues to drive education outcomes, where classroom instruction should have the upper hand on this.
The new season of Sold a Story is coming tomorrow. I've seen speculation about it. I think there will be some surprises. I'm interested to know what you think.
First two episodes tomorrow. Then one a week on Thursdays until Nov 19. features.apmreports.org/sold…

"To ask or expect [novices] to mimic the intellectual habits of experts is the [a] cargo-cult mistake ... confusing the visible behaviors of expertise with the accumulated knowledge that makes those behaviors productive."
Outstanding @rpondiscio discussion of the relationship between knowledge and reading.

As with reading, there are some useful conceptual models associated with writing.
Juel et al. (1986) suggested that there were parallels to be drawn between the SVoR & the processes involved in writing. Read more at @FIVEfromFIVE writing

💻 The NSW government has developed recommended maximum screen use guidelines for NSW public schools and preschools informed by evidence and advice from education and health research and practitioners, and consultation with principals and teachers. 📖 ✍️ Plus at least an hour a day is to be spent reading and writing on paper.

One of the biggest mistakes in math education has been the move away from practice and memorization. We're told memorization works against understanding. It's usually the opposite.
The more foundational knowledge students can retrieve automatically, the more working memory they have available to think about complex mathematics.

In 2013, I wrote a book called 7 Myths about Education.
Myth No.5 was about transferable skills.
I've updated my argument for a new @researchED1 project.
All the evidence, historical & scientific, on why you can't teach transferable skills.

Great to see some empirical evaluation of fidget toys in classrooms. And I’m all for allied health professionals being called out on recommending non evidence-based interventions too. A rising tide lifts all boats.

So-called “Learning Styles” were someone’s idea that got into the education water before the due diligence of scientific validation occurred - like so many others, such as notions of left-brain, right brain learners, multiple intelligences, growth mindset, “we only use 10% of our brains” and so on. Education won’t be a true profession until it hooks its wagon to scientific rigour and the accountability social contract attached to that.
Decades of research suggest that learning styles are a myth. Our updated Science of Learning report breaks down the #cogsci behind how students learn and dispels common myths that get in the way. deansforimpact.org/tools-and…

"If a medical school knowingly taught future physicians treatments that had been disproven decades ago, we would not call it academic freedom. We would call it malpractice. Yet in teacher preparation, programs can continue teaching methods that contradict the best available evidence"
This excellent article by @HeatherPeske focusses on reading, but the same is happening (maybe even worse) in math education. nctq.org/research-insights/w…

For far too long, we have been looking for that one "magic bullet" that will ensure literacy for all kids. But there is no magic bullet. Learning to read requires integration of ALL of the language systems (phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, morphology) taught directly and systematically, and aligned throughout the instructional sequence. Let's stop isolating our instruction and work together to INTEGRATE our instruction.
Education benefits when it’s focused on evidence and clear learning, not controversy. Consistent evidence based guidance continues to shape the quality of education through the Deans for Impact report on the “Science of Learning”
A decade after the original "Science of Learning" report from @deansforimpact the 2nd edition covers much of the same ground. This suggests the field "has learned (or ought to have) that the science of learning is not another fad."
