At ESA’s 2025 Ministerial Conference, the Space Safety Programme received significant support for its mission to predict, detect and mitigate space hazards, and to build towards a sustainable future in orbit. This is what we’re working on 👇

Usually, we move a satellite out of the way of space debris. But what if we could prevent collisions by moving the debris instead? Meet OMLET: laser-based collision avoidance from the ground: esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Video…

🛫 ☀️ When the Sun disrupts aviation
Did you know that #SpaceWeather can affect flights in surprising ways?
One phenomenon gaining attention is the impact of energetic charged particles - originating from our Sun and even distant stars - on aircraft electronics.

Congestion and pollution in Earth orbit is quickly getting worse. We need to be able to quantify how our behaviour will impact the orbital environment in the future...

ALT Earth is surrounded by thousands of satellites carrying out important work to provide telecommunications and navigation services, help us understand our climate, and answer fundamental questions about the Universe. However, as our use of space accelerates like never before, these satellites find themselves navigating increasingly congested orbits in an environment criss-crossed by streams of fast-moving debris fragments resulting from collisions, fragmentations and breakups in space. The colour-coded representation of debris in the image shows the number of objects of various sizes as well as active satellites that are modelled to be circling Earth in August 2024.

There are multiple filaments (arches of cool plasma in the Sun’s atmosphere), currently on the Sun. Some are smaller, but others span HUGE longitudinal distances. If any of these erupt whilst facing Earth, we’d see strong geomagnetic storms as a result. Let’s wait and see!

Recurrent, negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream influence is likely to bring minor to moderate geomagnetic storming 25-26 June.

Who want to start a grass-roots effort to nominate Gene Parker for the @NobelPrize ? I'm taking names - it is an absolute scandal that he has been overlooked. Retweet if you agree. He has almost single-handedly encapsulated what we know about the Sun. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene…

A stealth CME! I need to consult with my lovely team at @issi_bern for possible low coronal signatures. I tentatively suspect an eruption from disk center resulting in a weak post-eruption arcade masking a CH. Agree that this may arrive at Earth around 29 Oct.
The slow effects of the CME are expected to arrive on October 29 or 30.
very slow.

Mars continues to surprise us. While digging this weekend the mole backed about halfway out of the ground. Preliminary assessment points to unexpected soil properties as the main reason. Team looking at next steps. #SaveTheMole #Teamwork

While it undoubtedly generates publicity, the credibility of Scientific Reports must be suffering as a result of publishing such kinds of "controversial", error-laden studies. I regret publishing two of my bigger (hopefully error-free) results of recent years in Sci Rep.
