An early-season low will dive southward off CA coast into tomorrow, bringing widespread rainfall to Central Coast (& lesser showers elsewhere). Aided by unusually strong jet overhead, cold air aloft, & record-warm ocean temps, some notable thunderstorm activity is also possible.

Gusty #SantaAnaWinds will be common region-wide tomorrow through Saturday. Some areas that don't typically see gusty Santa Ana Winds, such as the Los Angeles Basin, may see breezy east winds Friday and Saturday. Plan for power outages and travel delays. #CAwx

Two beams of light stretched into the night sky above Santa Clarita’s Central Park on Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks and honoring those who lost their lives. The city’s tribute at the River of Lights, located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road, symbolized the World Trade Center towers. It honored the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks, first responders who later died from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero and military members who answered the call to serve in the War on Terror. Mayor Laurene Weste, who attended the memorial, reflected on camera about the uncertainty and grief of that day and the courage of first responders. “We didn’t know what was happening. We didn’t know if America was under attack. And then we saw the horror,” Weste said. “Our heart went out to them and our firefighters here went to New York.” Weste described Santa Clarita as a patriotic community and said the anniversary offered an opportunity to remember those who died while reaffirming the importance of unity. “I’m so proud of our country for standing together and making the effort to remember and honor those who gave their life,” she said. The city worked with Illumination Dynamics to make the tribute possible. The lights were scheduled to begin shining at approximately 7:15 p.m., depending on sunset, and remain illuminated until 10 p.m. In a statement ahead of the anniversary, Weste emphasized the responsibility to teach future generations about the attacks and those who responded. “We must continue to tell their stories, honor their sacrifice and ensure that America never forgets,” she said. At the memorial, Weste said the twin beams served as a reminder of the strength found in standing together. “There’s more that unites us than divides us,” she said. “And we may have differences, but that’s okay. United, we will stand strong.”

While Hurricane Marie is forecast to move to the northwest, well away from California, there will still likely be some impacts across Southern California this holiday weekend. If you are headed to the beach, stay near a lifeguard. #CAwx #LARain

#PlaskettFire is burning intensely on all flanks this evening, has now burned to Hwy 1 and possibly to Pacific Ocean, and is likely over 20k acres at this point. Between Plaskett and #TimberFire to north, much of Monterey County coast is now under evacuation warnings or orders.

Showers rapidly forming over parts of Los Angeles County, with continued activity over San Luis Obispo Co. Amounts should be light, but enough to make roads slippery. A lightning strike could form as well. If you hear thunder or see lightning, head indoors until the storm passes

➡️ The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the mountains and foothills of Los Angeles County and a number of surrounding counties, including Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo. The Warning is in effect through 3 p.m. PDT Friday, August 28. ➡️ A Red Flag Warning is an alert that weather conditions are creating extreme wildfire risks. This week, extreme heat (100-110 degrees in the lower mountains and foothills), humidity as low as 7 percent, and wind gusts up to 40 mph are combining to create a real risk of fast-growing, unpredictable fires. These are the same conditions that produced some of the region's largest fires, including the Bridge, Bobcat, and Station Fires. ➡️ Take a few minutes to get ready: keep your phone charged, know where your family members are (especially anyone who may need extra help or time to move), and make a plan for pets or larger animals. Update your Watch Duty app and check your notification settings now. While you're preparing, we're preparing too: we've increased our 24/7 staffing so we can get you life-saving information the moment conditions change.

Still looking like a potentially bad week for #SoCal: - Major-Extreme heat risk - Critical #FireWx conditions: - Hot/dry conditions - Gusty SW-NW winds - Mixing heights up to 20,000 feet - Analog fires include Bridge, Bobcat and Airport
#SoCal heat is expected to peak on Thursday, with very hot daytime temperatures from the Deserts all the way to the Metro areas along the coastal plain. Only the higher elevations of the Mountains and locations along the immediate Coast/Beaches will offer a reprieve from triple-digit heat. #CAwx

We’re off to an ugly start to fire season in So Cal. Usually this time of year we see small grass fires in light flashy fuels but the fire behavior so far this season has been ominous.
BREAKING: Firefighters are battling a fast-moving brush fire threatening a veterans housing community in Santa Clarita. The Pointe Fire was reported at approximately 1:40 p.m. near Spirit Court and Centre Pointe Parkway. The fire is burning in vegetation behind the neighborhood, prompting a large response from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Residents, including veterans living in the community, were seen evacuating as firefighters worked to protect homes and stop the fire’s spread. The fire remains active, and additional details, including acreage and containment, were not immediately available.
