In the early stages of my research career, I was involved in the functionalization of the fullerene bilayer vesicles discovered by Prof. Sawamura, through which I gained a wealth of experience. I also remember being taught by him in classes and student experiments. RIP
A memorial article has been published for Professor Sawamura, who passed away suddenly this past April. The legacy of Masaya Sawamura: A journey through chiral space: Chem cell.com/chem/fulltext/S2451…

1️⃣ equivalent of Se(III) = 1️⃣ equivalent of linchpin directly from C–H bonds. In our latest preprint, we report the use of cationic selenuranes as dump-and-stir reagents for the late-stage formation of linchpins. No need for additional activators. Only atmospheric O₂!

Rare example of 6 endo favoured over 5 exo and even rarer example where ladderanes are formed too. Great work by Ze-Xin and the rest of the team @AggarwalLab @BristolChem @NatureChemistry @ChemistryWorld
‘The rule-of-five is an observation in radical cyclisations of non-conjugated dienes, that a five-membered ring is generally favoured over other ring sizes,’ says Varinder Aggarwal. Now, chemists are finding ways to tune reactions & break this rule. chemistryworld.com/news/chem…

Our latest paper is now out in @J_A_C_S! Carbenoid species have had a profound impact on synthetic chemistry and are now indispensable tools for building molecular complexity. Yet one of their smallest main-group relatives, the borylene, has remained notably absent from the synthetic chemist’s toolbox, despite its fascinating and highly unusual electronic structure. Since starting our group, one of our major goals has been to address this challenge and explore the synthetic potential of borylenes. In our work, we report an exceptionally mild and modular approach to borylene generation from simple, readily diversifiable precursors. We then use this platform to explore the cycloaddition chemistry of borylenes with alkenes, providing access to unique fused borirane architectures. This reactivity developed into a chemo- and regioselective strategy for alkene functionalization, with the resulting boriranes serving as versatile synthetic intermediates. We further demonstrate its utility through application to the formal synthesis of natural products. We believe this work takes borylenes one step closer to becoming practical species for synthetic chemistry, and opens the door to many new transformations yet to be discovered. pubs.acs.org/jacsat/article/…
