I have a dream that one day people from different statistical fields like mathematical statistics, econometrics, psychometrics and machine learning will have a conference every 10 years or so to standardize terminology and coordinate notation. It would be a golden age.

My team @CommonApp is hiring!!! apply.workable.com/j/6B08D29… In my very biased opinion, hard to find a better balance of (1) impactful, exciting, and far-reaching work (2) committed+caring colleagues (3) exceptional work-life balance (fully remote!) (4) phenomenally generous benefits

I don't think lossy compression is a very helpful analogy to convey what (linguistic or multimodal) generative models do – at least if "blurry JPEGs" is the leading metaphor. It might work in a loose sense, but it doesn't tell the whole story. 1/ newyorker.com/tech/annals-of…

Ted Chiang’s piece on ChatGPT and large language models is as good as everyone says. The fact that the outputs are rephrasings rather than direct quotes makes them seem game-changingly smart — even sentient — but they’re just very straightforwardly not. newyorker.com/tech/annals-of…

New post! "You Also Have An Ideology." Inspired by, erm, recent events, but really about a much broader tendency to treat the normative ideology as though it does not exist. getsyeducated.substack.com/p…

Why did I walk away from tenure for industry? TLDR: I loved academia before I didn’t. It was the right fit before it wasn’t. It was my dream job before it stopped being my dream job. Then something else was. Change can be good! Read this thread for details

Better deal! Not doing 7 roles (teacher, advisor, researcher, lab manager, committee chair, grant pi, external vendor) at 1.5 FTE for 1/3 the compensation. Admittedly those were my choices (max overload) but were necessary given cost of living. Didn’t want to regularly work …

This whole thing is silly. If Democrats do any student loan forgiveness, it will push more working class people to the GOP. And it won’t fix the problem, because the problem is the way the loans are structured. The structure of the loans is unfair. That should be the message. 1/
Progressive socialist don't want $10k, $20k, $30k or $50k erased student loans, they want all of nothing. Either President Biden & Democrats erase 100% of student loans or they will continue to threaten us with a Republican leadership & make sure we have a Republican leadership.

Statistics terminology is truly unhinged. Different names for the same terms across fields. The same names for different things across fields. Common language terms applied in highly specialized ways. Two similar terms used to mean entirely opposite concepts.

The argument for standardized testing is that more information is good. No one criteria is perfect so we use as much information as possible. Some scholars argue that requiring everyone to take the SAT or the ACT is a better option than removing it completely
