🆘🆘 ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHY 🆘🆘
Wasur National Park in South Papua is facing catastrophic destruction caused by intentional, illegal forest fires set to clear land for large-scale monoculture plantations, particularly palm oil and sugarcane. While weather patterns like El Niño aggravate the dry conditions, the root cause is artificial land-clearing driven by commercial interests.
This is heavily tied to the government’s Merauke Food & Energy Estate project, which has reclassified huge swaths of traditional forests and drained natural wetlands, turning former firebreaks into dry tinderboxes.
Environmental groups like WALHI have traced thousands of satellite fire hotspots directly to these plantation concessions.
The Scale of the Fires in Wasur
•Hundreds of Hotspots: Satellite data has detected over 500 active fire hotspots in the region, with flames directly encroaching upon and penetrating the park's boundaries.
•Critically Threatened Sanctuaries: The fires have breached deeply into the park's core protection zones, including the Wallaby Sanctuary, threatening the immediate survival of the park’s unique marsupials.
•Loss of Biodiversity: The scale of the smoke and burning is devastating the habitats of over 350 bird species and the southern cassowary. The park's unique musamus (giant termite mounds) and savannas are being heavily scorched.
•Human and Cultural Impact: The fires are actively destroying the hunting grounds and sacred lands of the four indigenous tribes (Marind, Kanum, Marori, and Yei) who rely entirely on the park's ecosystem for their traditional way of life.
The Scale of the Devastation in Wasur
•Surge in Fire Hotspots: Environmental monitors have detected a major surge in fires, recording over 570 active hotspots in South Papua, with numerous smoke sources and active blazes identified directly inside the boundaries of the 431,425-hectare Wasur National Park.
•Tens of Thousands of Hectares Lost: Across the wider West Papua region, fires have consumed more than 30,000 hectares of forest and land. South Papua Province alone has borne the brunt of this destruction, losing 25,838 hectares—a staggering threefold increase compared to the previous year.
•Breaching Core Protection Zones: The fires have actively breached deeply into the park's primary conservation areas, directly threatening the Wallaby Sanctuary, where park rangers and volunteers have been forced to fight flames to save the park's unique marsupials.
•Ecological and Human Cost: The scale of the destruction is wiping out critical habitats for the park's 358 bird species, the southern cassowary, and native wallabies. Simultaneously, the heavy toxic haze has blanketed the region—forcing school closures and cutting off air links. It is destroying the hunting grounds and sacred lands of the four indigenous tribes (Marind, Kanum, Marori, and Yei) who rely entirely on the park for survival.

VICTORY FOR THE HORSES
Today, October 22, 2026, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly, 40-7, to pass Romanch's Law, legislation that will finally end the city's cruel horse-drawn carriage industry.
After decades of campaigning by animal advocates, this is a long-overdue victory for the countless horses who have endured suffering, injury, and even death while being forced to pull carriages through New York City's crowded streets.
WHAT ROMANCH'S LAW WILL DO
•End horse-drawn carriage operations in NYC by June 1, 2028.
•Require a transition plan for carriage drivers and other workers.
•Require the humane placement of carriage horses and prohibit their sale for slaughter or for use in other carriage businesses.

Hope the elephant stays okay. Baby's patience has finally broken down after years of abuse & trauma. I hope he was not beaten again by the mahouts after being controlled. All elephants need their habitat & herd. Send the captive elephants to sanctuaries. They don't belong to you!

It’s sadism:

LOOK AT HOW THIS ELEPHANT IS CHAINED IN SHIVAMOGGA, KARNATAKA.
His legs restrained, his movement restricted, his body painted and decorated for a religious procession.
Even criminals arent chained like this, but an innocent animal?
THIS IS THE REALITY OF TEMPLE ELEPHANTS BEHIND THE GLORY OF OUR FESTIVALS.
We celebrate tradition while these sentient beings pay the price with their freedom and dignity.
And now, 5 elephants from Assam are facing a future in Tamil Nadu. Is this the life that awaits them too? Chains, confinement, forced participation in religious ceremonies and a lifetime of being controlled for human beliefs?
We cannot allow their future to become another story of captivity and suffering.
RELIGION IS NO EXCUSE FOR CRUELTY. TRADITION DOES NOT JUSTIFY CHAINS.
We must speak up NOW. Save these five elephants from a future of captivity. They deserve to live as elephants, not as prisoners of human tradition.
