We Are Not Anti-Hindu. We Are Asking for Compassion. 🐘 Whenever We speak about the suffering of captive elephants in the name of tradition and culture, We are sometimes labelled anti-Hindu. It saddens us that concern for an animal's freedom can be interpreted as hostility towards someone's faith. We understand that these traditions hold deep spiritual, cultural and emotional meaning for many people, and We do not wish to dismiss or disrespect that connection. We are not asking anyone to abandon their beliefs, disrespect their deities or reject their culture. We are simply asking us, with humility and care, to look at the life of an elephant beyond its religious symbolism. An elephant is not merely a symbol of divinity. It is a living, sentient being with its own needs, emotions, social bonds and natural instincts. Like us, elephants can feel fear, pain, loneliness and distress, and they deserve to be treated with gentleness and dignity. Can We not respect our faith while also compassionately questioning practices that may cause suffering? Can We not preserve the meaning of our traditions while finding kinder ways to celebrate them? Our concern is not with the faith of the devotee, but with the welfare of the elephant. Our appeal is not to create division or blame, but to invite understanding, reflection and positive change. Please do not judge our compassion for elephants as hatred towards a religion. Instead, let us listen to one another with open hearts and have an honest, respectful conversation about their suffering. We may see tradition differently, but We can still meet in compassion. We can acknowledge the importance of faith while also recognising that cruelty deserves our attention and every living being deserves care. Faith and compassion need not stand on opposite sides. Let us choose a path where devotion is expressed with kindness, and where celebration does not come at the cost of an elephant's dignity, wellbeing and freedom. ❤️🐘 #FaithAndCompassion #CompassionOverCruelty #TraditionWithCompassion #DevotionWithCompassion #CultureWithKindness #SpeakForTheVoiceless #ElephantsDeserveBetter #LetElephantsBeElephants #EndCaptiveElephantSuffering

If an captive elephant's suffering is brought to our attention, should our first response be to defend a tradition or to understand the suffering? Compassion for an animal should not be treated as hostility towards a faith. #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

If IFS Officers Have the Will, They Can Make a Difference for Captive Elephants The Indian Forest Service (IFS) is entrusted with protecting India's wildlife. Yet captive elephants continue to face confinement, physical restraint and stressful human activities. Many IFS officers share wildlife conservation messages on social media. Awareness is important, but conservation must go beyond publicity and translate into meaningful action. Officers with relevant authority and expertise can make a real difference by: * Advocating legal reform: Recommend reviewing Section 40 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and related provisions to address loopholes and strengthen safeguards against unnecessary elephant transfers and continued captivity. * Developing welfare policies: Push for independent welfare assessments, better living conditions, appropriate social contact and enforceable standards for captive elephants. * Enforcing existing laws: Investigate credible complaints, verify transfer documents, monitor compliance and ensure violations receive appropriate legal attention. * Prioritising rehabilitation: Advocate government-funded sanctuaries, expert-led rehabilitation and sustainable lifetime care for elephants who cannot return to the wild. * Challenging harmful practices: Encourage alternatives to using live elephants in processions and ceremonies, while promoting compassion that respects both cultural traditions and animal welfare. * Listening to citizens: Respond constructively to representations from conservationists, researchers and animal-welfare organisations instead of allowing genuine concerns to go unanswered. Not every IFS officer has the authority to take every action. However, those without direct powers can still raise concerns through appropriate channels, contribute research and recommend policy changes. The question is simple. If officers have the knowledge to understand elephant suffering, the authority to enforce existing protections and the professional standing to influence government policy, what concrete steps are they taking to end that suffering? An elephant cannot submit a representation, challenge an administrative decision or demand freedom from unnecessary restraint. Humans have created the systems that determine its life, and humans must take responsibility for changing them. If wildlife conservation is a genuine commitment, let it be reflected not merely in social media posts, but in stronger laws, effective enforcement, meaningful rehabilitation and lives transformed. Captive elephants do not need more symbolic expressions of concern. They need action from those empowered to protect them. #IndianForestServcie #CaptiveElephantRehabilitation #StopElephantCaptivity @CentralIfs @moefcc @assamforest @tnforestdept @DisttForester

WE TORTURE ELEPHANTS FOR OUR DEVOTION, THEN PUNISH THEM FOR REACTING TO OUR CRUELTY. WHEN WILL WE LEARN? A temple elephant, forced to endure a procession filled with crowds, deafening noise, and immense stress, ran away. But before blaming the elephant, let us question the humans who put it in that situation. We force these magnificent, intelligent beings to stand for hours amidst chaos, carry heavy loads, and participate in unnatural activities for our rituals and celebrations. We expect them to endure everything silently, without fear, distress, or resistance. And when their suffering finally manifests as a reaction, we poke them with bullhooks, punish them, and blame them for being dangerous. How can we inflict suffering on a living being and then punish it for expressing that suffering? An elephant running away is not necessarily an act of aggression. It may be an attempt to escape an overwhelming situation. Instead of asking why the elephant reacted, we must ask why we forced it to endure such distress in the first place. If elephants are considered representatives of the divine, shouldn't our devotion inspire compassion, respect, and protection? How can we claim to honour a sacred being while denying it freedom, dignity, and the right to live without fear? Devotion should never be an excuse for cruelty. Tradition should never be a justification for suffering. Elephants are not slaves, ceremonial objects, or instruments of religious celebration. They are sentient beings with their own needs, emotions, and natural behaviours. It is time we stopped forcing elephants to suffer in the name of devotion. Let our faith be reflected not in how we use these magnificent beings, but in how compassionately we treat them. If we truly respect the divine, let us stop making its representatives suffer. Elephants deserve freedom, not chains; compassion, not bullhooks; and dignity, not captivity. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept @animalwelfareb1 @moefcc @ShobanaRaviNews #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept @PasupathyMasi #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Let Our Devotion Become an Act of Compassion When a devotee offers fruit to a captive elephant and watches it happily eat, the moment often brings joy to the human heart. The devotee may feel blessed, believing that this gentle interaction is an expression of love and devotion. And that love may be entirely sincere. But perhaps we can pause for a moment and look beyond that beautiful encounter. An elephant may enjoy the fruit it receives, yet still long for the freedom to walk, explore, bathe, forage and live alongside its fellow elephants. The happiness we witness in a few moments cannot tell us whether the elephant is truly thriving in captivity. Without realising it, our well-intentioned offerings may also help sustain a practice that keeps these magnificent animals confined for our religious and cultural experiences. This is not about blaming devotees. It is about gently asking ourselves whether our love for elephants can go beyond the pleasure of feeding them. If our devotion teaches us compassion for all living beings, should it not also inspire us to care about the life an elephant lives when we are no longer standing beside it? An elephant deserves more than fruits offered by loving hands. It deserves space, companionship, dignity and the opportunity to live according to its natural needs. Perhaps the most meaningful blessing is not the moment an elephant accepts our offering, but the day we choose not to support the conditions that deprive it of freedom. Let our devotion be guided by compassion. Let our love bring us closer to understanding the elephant's needs. And let our prayers be accompanied by actions that help these gentle giants live a life worthy of their magnificence. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

An elephant's true conservation value is not measured by how much it serves humanity, how sacred we consider it, or how many visitors it attracts. It lies in its right to live with dignity and in the extraordinary role it plays in the natural world. #elephantconservation #elephantrehabilitation #stopelephantcaptivity

Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. Devotees pray to him for wisdom, protection and freedom from suffering. Yet, in a painful contradiction, the very animal whose form is central to his divinity continues to suffer in the name of religious devotion. Elephants are intelligent, sentient, socially complex wild animals who deserve to live with dignity, freedom and the opportunity to express their natural behaviours. Yet many captive elephants endure chains, confinement, separation from their natural social groups and the demands of religious ceremonies. Their physical and psychological needs are too often subordinated to human beliefs, traditions and expectations. What is the meaning of worshipping a deity in the form of an elephant while denying freedom to a living elephant? Tradition cannot be a justification for suffering, and devotion should never come at the cost of another being's welfare. If we seek wisdom from Ganesha, we must have the wisdom to question practices that cause harm. If we seek protection through prayer, we must be willing to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. Elephants do not need to be chained to prove our devotion. Their presence in religious ceremonies is not necessary to honour the divine. We can preserve our faith and cultural heritage through compassionate alternatives that do not exploit living animals. The true measure of our devotion lies not in how beautifully we worship an elephant-headed God, but in how compassionately we treat the living elephants who share our world. Let us not worship the image of freedom while denying freedom to the elephant. Let us honour Ganesha by ending elephant suffering, protecting their welfare and allowing them to live as wild animals—not as instruments of human tradition. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

When will the judiciary unequivocally recognise that elephants are wild animals, not property to be possessed by temples or private individuals? Under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, elephants are protected under Schedule I, and their possession, acquisition and transfer are subject to statutory restrictions and regulatory permissions. Article 48A and Article 51A(g) of the Constitution also reinforce the State’s duty to protect wildlife and every citizen’s responsibility to show compassion for living creatures. While Indian law continues to permit certain forms of regulated captive-elephant possession, should legal permission alone be enough to justify a wild animal’s lifelong confinement for religious, cultural or commercial purposes? Will the courts move beyond regulating captivity and seriously examine whether it should continue at all? Elephants are sentient, free-ranging wild animals whose ecological role and welfare cannot be reduced to human ownership or religious utility. The question is not whether traditions deserve respect, but whether traditions must evolve when they conflict with wildlife protection, animal welfare and compassion. When will the law place an elephant’s freedom and welfare above the human claim to possess it? #livelaw #supremecourt #madrashighcourt #captiveelephants

Today, on the auspicious occasion of Ayudha Pooja, people worship the tools, instruments and machines that support their professions and livelihoods. But what does it mean when the tools used to control and inflict suffering on captive elephants are also placed in the name of devotion? Bullhooks (ankush), sticks, spiked chains, ropes, knives and other restraining devices used to control, intimidate and subjugate these sentient beings are among the tools associated with elephant captivity. Is it not a contradiction to worship the tools of our livelihood while overlooking the suffering they inflict on another life? Can devotion truly have meaning when the instruments of control and cruelty are revered, while the lives subjected to them are denied freedom and dignity? Dear Chief Minister Vijay, you are entrusted with the responsibility of governing our state with compassion, justice and equality. Under your leadership, please do not allow this age-old practice of elephant enslavement to continue indefinitely in the name of tradition. Your government’s guiding principle, “Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum” — all lives are equal by birth — must extend beyond words and become a reality for every living being. True devotion is not merely about worshipping the tools we use; it is about questioning whether our actions cause suffering to others. True leadership is not just about preserving traditions, but having the courage to reform those that deny freedom and dignity to other lives. Let this Ayudha Pooja be an opportunity to reflect, reform and choose compassion over cruelty. Let us worship our tools without glorifying the suffering they cause. Let us build a society where every life is treated with respect, dignity and compassion. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

There was a time when humans were enslaved, traded, abused, imprisoned, and killed for the benefit of others. Over time, we evolved to recognize that human slavery was unethical and morally wrong, learning to value every human life with dignity and equality. Yet, this moral evolution remains incomplete. Elephants continue to be enslaved, traded, and abused in the name of tradition, culture, and human interests. We abolished slavery for our own species, but we continue to justify it for other living beings. Perhaps the human desire to dominate and control other lives has not disappeared; it has simply drawn a boundary around our own species. We have freed ourselves from the chains of slavery while leaving elephants bound by ours. True moral progress begins when we recognize that the value of a life does not depend on its species. Respect, dignity, and freedom should not be privileges reserved for humans, but principles extended to all sentient beings. #CaptiveElephantWelfare #NoElephantsinTemple #StopElephantCaptivity #ElephantRehabilitation

Namashivaya Deserves More Than a Sacred Name — He Deserves Freedom Renaming a captive elephant Namashivaya is a moment that calls for deeper reflection. The name itself carries a profound spiritual meaning: “I bow to Lord Shiva.” But what does this sacred mantra mean if the elephant who bears the name continues to live in confinement, deprived of the freedom to live according to his natural instincts? Lord Shiva is associated with Nandi, the bull, and is often depicted amidst the wilderness, symbolising a profound connection with nature. The mantra Om Namah Shivaya invites humility, reverence, and the surrender of human ego before the divine. Should this reverence not extend to the living beings who share this Earth with us? An elephant is not a religious object, a symbol to be possessed, or an instrument for fulfilling human traditions. He is a sentient being with his own needs, emotions, social bonds, and natural instincts. He deserves the opportunity to walk freely, forage, explore, socialise with other elephants, and experience life beyond the restrictions imposed by humans. If we truly bow to Shiva, should we not also bow to the dignity of the life that exists beyond our control? Religious beliefs and traditions may hold deep meaning for people, but they should also inspire compassion and responsibility. The sacredness of an elephant's name cannot compensate for the deprivation of his freedom. Nor should the honour bestowed upon him become a reason to overlook his individual welfare. Perhaps the most meaningful way to honour Namashivaya is not merely to give him a sacred name, but to give that name a living expression through compassion. Let his name remind us that devotion is not measured by how closely we bring animals into our religious lives, but by how respectfully we allow them to live their own. If Namashivaya is named in honour of Shiva, let us honour that name by working towards a life that respects his natural needs, dignity, and freedom. Om Namah Shivaya. Let this be more than a mantra on human lips. Let it become a reminder to protect the lives with whom we share this world. @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation
A new name: NAMASHIVAYA. But what changes for this young elephant? A sacred name cannot replace freedom, space or companionship. The mahout holds an ankush (bull hook) as the elephant stands amid a crowd for a photo-op, controlled by the threat of pain. Rule 6(4) of the TN Captive Elephants Rules, 2011 requires a notice asking pilgrims not to feed temple elephants. When those in power ignore this on camera, devotees and children follow. Reunite Hiralal, Durga, Bijuli, Shiva and Rupsing with their families. Stop further transfers. True devotion is compassion, not captivity! @CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ - your subordinates are misleading you, please form a SIT & take action on all those who are involved in trafficking of elephants go Tamil Nadu from Assam. Mahout use Knife & drag Hiralal by the Ear to control him. #SaveTheFive #VerifyTheFive #FreeTheFive #NoElephantsInTemples #StopElephantCaptivity

@CMOTamilnadu @TVKVijayHQ @RameshOffcl @tnforestdept @RvRanjithtvk @tnhrcedept @AadhavArjuna #NoElephantsInTemples #WhyTheChains #StopElephantCaptivity #NoElephantsinZoo #CaptiveElephantWelfare #ElephantRehabilitation

Dear Elon Musk @elonmusk, While you are trying to bring Starlink to India, I would like to ask you to consider an opportunity that could make you a true champion of animal welfare in the country. Mukesh Ambani’s Vantara has established a facility that reportedly cares for around 250 elephants. This is a significant initiative, but India has a much larger elephant welfare crisis that needs urgent attention. Thousands of elephants continue to live in captivity in India, many kept by private owners, temples and other institutions. These highly intelligent, social and sentient beings are taken away from their natural lives and confined to human purposes. Many endure chains, restricted movement, isolation, demanding work and harsh training practices. Even when their basic needs are met, captivity can deny them the freedom to make their own choices, form natural social bonds and live as elephants were meant to live. Elon, if you are looking for a way to make a lasting difference in India beyond technology, consider helping establish a nationwide elephant rescue and rehabilitation initiative. With your resources and technological expertise, you could help rescue elephants from abusive conditions, create spacious natural habitats, support expert veterinary care, reunite compatible elephants and provide lifelong sanctuary where release into the wild is not possible. India has more than 1,500 captive elephants in private custody, according to reported government figures. Imagine the difference a dedicated initiative could make to these animals. You may face commercial and regulatory hurdles in the Indian telecommunications market, but you have another opportunity to win the hearts of millions of Indians—not through competition, but through compassion. If you genuinely commit to the welfare and rehabilitation of captive elephants, animal lovers across India and around the world would welcome and support such an initiative. We would also be willing to advocate for fair consideration of Starlink by the Indian government, while recognising that telecommunications licensing must be decided independently on its merits. You have the opportunity to connect the world through Starlink. You could also help reconnect captive elephants with the natural lives they have been denied. Please consider making elephant freedom and welfare another part of your legacy. With hope and respect, A voice for India's captive elephants 🐘 @PFCII @elephantsjp
