Working on a piece and I'm curious to hear thoughts from you NHL fans: Over the past 25 years or so, who are your most hated teams? Not just in general, but a team in a given year that just made you so mad whenever you saw them on TV or in town or anything?

And not only that, but got the first time, using data imputation methods that combine knowledge of the schedule, the positional averages, player history, and interactions; Post Hockey has created "full season estimates" for A3Z metrics.

NEW A3Z
Spare thoughts on the Nikishin contract situation, his rookie season, what the mundane shifts look like for him, how you can make an impact on the third pair & how the vision of the team changed over the past 18 months.

The badges on my website are trying to do just this sort of thing. They add a combination of A3Z metrics, microstats that a person actually individually performed, to on-ice impacts to determine certain skills.
For instance, Lane Hutson tilted the ice which had positive defensive impacts, but didn't demonstrate defensive skills to produce that effect. His top skills were speed and transporting (moving the puck toward the OZ).
Meanwhile, Slavin was the #1 player in the NHL protecting the blueline, Tanev was a great "slingshot" -- getting the puck out of the zone quickly after retrieving dumps, and Korczak is great at preventing high danger opportunities.
These things can contribute to strong defensive results when used properly, and are needed in certain situations, but when measured in the aggregate, may not produce defensive impacts as high as Hutson's who produces some of that effect using skills traditionally described as "offensive," moving the puck into the OZ more often and easily than others.
Jeff Blashill is not a fan of the current state of NHL defensive analytics.
"I've yet to see a single defensive analytic that's really reflective of how good a player is defensively without a while-on-ice stat. Trust me when I tell you I've seen a lot of them and we dig into them, so I would just encourage everybody to make sure you trust the stat before we use the stat... Just beacuse somebody puts it out there doesn't mean it measures what it's supposed to measure and it's accurate."

Started as a post on the Raddysh trade/signing but turned into me journaling about some of the other big defensemen moves that happened over the past week. Looking at teams that build their defense from within vs. those who pay a premium.
