Rory said something after his round today that made me stop and think (another reason why hearing from him is always such a good thing!) "I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you've got to make your way back down, and you've got to look for another mountain to climb." It doesn't surprise me - I've written and spoken about this in relation to him plenty since April - but it did make me think: What's my Everest? Not only have I not climbed it, I genuinely don't believe I know what it is. There's a good chance you're in the same position. If you're Tiger Woods, you're certainly in the same position. He never scaled his. So, I imagine it must be discombobulating to actually do it. Good thing, bad thing, positive, negative, fun, scary, exhilarating, suffocating, euphoric, jading - I've no idea. Neither does Tiger. But Rory does. As I said earlier in the week, he's navigating a really fascinating period of his career. No wonder his form isn't where he'd like it to be. All that said, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if he went and won the Open next month by half a dozen. Most compelling player of our generation, and even more so now.
