Unite has given social enterprise @GLL_UK a reasonable timeframe to rectify all the issues raised – otherwise strike action remains very much on the cards.

From the core team who worked tirelessly to the hundreds who petitioned and marched to the library staff who had to endure uncertainty... This campaign really did take a village. All worth it. We love our library, we do!

performance targets are unrealistic and staff are not given the resources to meet the demands of the job.
We hope if you're reading this you can make tomorrow and bring any banners.

Jobs are being cut and staff are not being paid properly.
The majority of staff – 70% - are on zero hour contracts with some not getting work for weeks on end and others getting only a few hours a week. Based on a survey carried out by Unite, bullying is common, .. #/

GLL were handed the contract to run libraries by Bromley Council but not long after this staff had to go on strike in order to stop GLL cutting jobs. The union and GLL reached an agreement – ensuring that vacant posts would be filled. GLL has gone back on that agreement.

Great.
It shouldn't be ignored though that the council in Lewisham is a Labour majority and have undermined their own libraries and staff, left them in a terrible state. The local party who are apparently partnering in this strike fundraiser.
Get your house in order or quit.

It’s absolutely disgraceful that Lewisham is bidding to be Borough of Culture when they’ve got one of the worst library services I’ve ever seen 🤷♀️
SaveLewLibraries retweeted
So a “ruby in Lewisham’s cultural crown” isn’t their library service but a telephone box full of old books!!!

Public Libraries today COULD be the best place to gain knowledge, answer queries, study, communicate, enjoy diverting texts in all mediums, top quality books & computing "For the many", helped to it by professional Librarians employed securely & accountably as council staff.

Lewisham A) didn't need to cut Libraries to fit Tory Government orders - reserves would have covered it, or a touch from the overpaid. B) didn't assess the model of volunteers assisting staff. Instead it signed Libraries over to amateur organisations fully reliant on volunteers.
My position on library volunteers has always been this:
I’ve never been against library volunteers who within agreed limits assist staff what I am against is the ideological wholesale substitution of staff by volunteers and the damage & fragmentation it causes.

This is important & not well-understood. Local Authority cuts have been bad, but they are about to get much worse as Councils that have maintained services run out of options. Its why we must stand with #LocalGov calling for fair funding in the next Spending Review #civicfutureUK

Language of co-production, partnership & community-managed models massively problematic. Yes the 'model' 'works' insofar as it averts closure but there are people behind the model, working to deliver what service users still consider a public service for NO PAY #CivicFutureUK
SaveLewLibraries retweeted
Many local authority leaders are proud of not closing libraries thanks to #AssetTransfer. But "not closing" libraries is not the same as keeping them open. To be truly "open" a public library must be truly "public" with apt levels of qualified, sustainable support. #CivicFutureUK

Great speech by @newxlearning by Gill Hart and Kath Dunbar on the real struggles on the ground at the coalface of austerity localist libraries. Urging unpaid library workers to unionise for change ✊ #CivicFutureUK @UniteCommGLAB

I helped to draft this open letter as I thought it was hugely unethical for CILIP to celebrate its first 'employer partnership' with Greenwich Leisure Ltd, which has taken over public libraries and driven Bromley public library workers to take indefinite industrial action!
