I feel like this demonstrates exactly why we will never get any traction on solving climate change. People really seem to need a clear and present danger to take even basic mitigation steps.

How many jobs are supported by federal funding? (Let’s include grad students and post docs too because they would be working other jobs if not in those roles.) #economics #workforce #joblessness #jobless #economicimpact

Academics are paid nothing for peer review. Yet journals made a total of over $8.3 billion on article processing charges alone between 2019-2023. Make it make sense.

A shortage of reviewers is a huge crisis in scientific publishing. It’s not due to a shortage of qualified people, but they are overburdened by demands for their uncompensated labor. Very hard for publishers to argue they can’t afford to make the system more fair & sustainable.

Keep in mind UPS and FedEx are both just sending parcels through USPS when they don't want to deliver somewhere.

Whelp. Maybe a good time to mention that I am about to open a new PhD position in Sweden that just happens to be exactly four years in length. Any aspiring PhD candidates in neurodegenerative imaging or multiomics who want to "take a break" from the US, please get in touch!

Drove by a daycare and my 4-year-old said "That's where I used to go." I told her she's never gone to daycare and she asked "Then who took care of me?" and I said "I did" if any parents were wondering if anything they do matters.

Yes. And the little flaps on the shoulders of the onesies? They're meant to be able to pull the onesie DOWN when there's a blowout so you don't get poop all over the baby's head. #protip

As scientists, we go to conferences but don’t connect with the local community at all. Thanks to @jscdavis, #BlackInNeuro will be hosting a Brain Carnival during SfN at a local Chicago church for the community to meet Black scientists, play games & learn about the brain 🧠✨

“When the AI provided an incorrect result, researchers found inexperienced and moderately experienced radiologists dropped their cancer-detecting accuracy from around 80% to about 22%. Very experienced radiologists’ accuracy dropped from nearly 80% to 45%.”😮

We don’t currently have any grant funding to support @SkypeScientist for 2025 😬 But! We have Frog Facts advent calendars to help float us until I get us funding! They are amazing! Every day scratch off the sparkles to get a frog fact. If we sell 5000 it will fully fund 2025.

Fascinating results! Only 56% of 4100 respondents chose the generally correct answer of $0, and 19% chose $10k! These are things that I didn't actively think about when I was a graduate student, but I am pretty sure I had hidden assumptions (that were wrong). 1/ #AcademicTwitter – at Phoenix, AZ
Grad students: Around how much money ($$) do you think/assume/guess your advisor/PI is given each year by their university (as condition of employment and not related to grants) for *general* lab operations (computers, lab supplies, etc.)? #AcademicTwitter

As you ambitiously revamp your syllabi, please have some mercy on future you who, from what it seems like right now, is going to have to do a bunch of reading at the last minute.
