‘How to handle a pandemic is not, and should not be, a matter that is up to individuals…Because when it comes down to it, these are not the sorts of individual ethical choices we should have to make.’ - @rocza of @RogueBioethics theguardian.com/us-news/2021…

We shouldn’t be only thinking of students and faculty when it comes to opening universities. Housekeepers, janitors, food service and tons of other staff are being put in an impossibly hard situation. newsobserver.com/news/local/…

It’s really stunning that #ai systems are being deployed in clinical settings to flag #COVID19 cases for various kinds of treatment. How are these systems validated? What training sets do they use? Absolutely wild #researchEthics #medicalEthics #MedicalAI
Possibly one of the least talked about healthcare scandals of the COVID-19 panademic: not only are patients not informed about the AI systems impacting their care, these systems are often poorly developed & reported and hardly tested

I’m not a clinician, but I wonder what other hypotheses could have been tested if we had not plowed tens of thousands of patients and dozens of studies into this one intervention. And when will there be enough evidence to revisit ongoing and planned trials of the same?
Just published @TheLancet
The largest study of hydroxychloroquine shows a significant increase in death (~35%) and >2-fold increase of serious heart arrhythmias. ~96,000 patients, ~15,000 on HCQ or CQ from 671 hospitals, 6 continents.

What happens when everybody who left their city for less populated areas decides they wanna come back? Two more weeks of quarantine (if we're being optimistic). Thanks to @rocza and @SaskiaPopescu for helping me think through returning to "normal"! vice.com/en_us/article/k7em4…

Scrambling to respond to the pandemic is one thing, scrambling to clean up the mess left by careless comments from our most senior leadership is quite another. Please listen to medical professions on this one.
Please keep hand sanitizer & cleaning products out of reach of children, avoid combining cleaning products which can release dangerous gases, & never ingest or intentionally inhale disinfectants, which may be harmful or fatal. 🇺🇸Poison Control open 24/7: (800) 222-1222 #COVID19

My observation after 2.5 weeks on the pandemic beat: There is something about the math in epidemiology that makes everyone who has a vaguely quant job think they can take a crack at it, in a way that just isn’t true for other policy-urgent disciplines, even climate science.

THIS WEEK: We talk to @KindrachukJason and @rocza about Coronavirus: what the virus is, how it's spreading, and the complicated situational ethics of how we protect ourselves and those most at risk. ow.ly/yR2b50yShGH

The coronavirus Diamond Prince quarantine was doomed. But so are most quarantines, writes @rocza.
Medicine today isn't the same as medicine in the 14th century, and very few people are looking for 14th century treatments in the 21st century.

This is based on data from over 40,000 patients. #SARSCoV2 #coronavirus causes mild #COVID19 disease in over 80% of patients. Mortality is low ~2%. This is welcome news in terms of the long-term impact of the virus.

This is a gigantic story & is grounds for Trump's immediate removal. However one may feel a/b Soleimani's killing, the fact that Esper has now confirmed Trump lied to the nation by fabricating embassy attacks, reconfirms he is the worst traitor the country has ever had
Breaking News: Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he didn't see any specific evidence that Iran had planned to attack 4 American embassies, as President Trump had claimed was justification for the strike that sent the U.S. and Iran to the brink of war
