‘How to handle a pandemic is not, and should not be, a matter that is up to individuals…Because when it comes down to it, these are not the sorts of individual ethical choices we should have to make.’ - @rocza of @RogueBioethics theguardian.com/us-news/2021…
Available to preorder, @neva9257’s new book tracks neuroscience innovations in national security, especially law enforcement, intelligence collection, & armed conflict, & looks at ethical questions & policy about how we can, & should, use these innovations.routledge.com/The-Ethics-of-…
Good question. I’ve seen very little engagement from media—or bioethicists. This should concern everyone. #bioethics -KH
Meanwhile, I’m surprised to hear they’re even tracking at most colleges. (Gonna go out on a limb and guess it’s not actually the colleges doing testing and tracking in most cases, which is problematic.) -KH
It was really fun to listen to this talk from the other room…but I am sad we weren’t able to be there. I miss Germany! (I need more Bautzen mustard. 😂) -KH
@neva9257, assistent professor @UMassLowell and co-founder of @roguebioethics is talking about ethics of testing autonomous vehicles:
"How much risk should we expose to public to when testing vehicles from which they may not directly benefit?"

And sometimes people are just abusives asses who should have assault charges brought against them.
I think we can trust Dr Willett knows whether or not the patient was in distress or just abusive, and we SHOULD support her, not follow the cop in shaming her. -KH
This is really interesting, and if we see this trend play out in other countries (and we should, so long as circumstances remain similar), it ought to lead to a reckoning on how influenza outbreaks are managed. (Note: I said OUGHT. I know the realities…) -KH
Nice work, #Queensland! Because of your great work in following good hygiene practices, socially distancing and getting the #flu shot, flu numbers this year are significantly lower than what they have been in the last five flu seasons and are 84% lower than this time last year!
"We often assume our friends are like us, that “what I think is risky is what they think is risky, and what they think is common sense is what I think is common sense. It just doesn’t work like that."" -KH, quoting KH 😉

3) some argue compassionate use is only for end of life cancer care. But we don’t just have 1 case w/ imminent death—we have thousands. 1200-1400 per day dying in US alone. Expanding P3 trial enrollment in hotspot areas could have a huge impact now even if 50/50 randomization.

We shouldn’t be only thinking of students and faculty when it comes to opening universities. Housekeepers, janitors, food service and tons of other staff are being put in an impossibly hard situation. newsobserver.com/news/local/…
And if you pop on over to Nick's personal twitter account, @neva9257, you can read his own words about his first foray into the philosophy of disability and why it's so important to him-us, really. -KH

Wasn’t there a third RCT paper this week that reiterated HCQ was a flop, too? It’s kind of amazing how people want to clutch at it so hard. (Also leads me to believe science is like sausage, and most people don’t want to know how it’s made.) -KH

It’s really stunning that #ai systems are being deployed in clinical settings to flag #COVID19 cases for various kinds of treatment. How are these systems validated? What training sets do they use? Absolutely wild #researchEthics #medicalEthics #MedicalAI
Possibly one of the least talked about healthcare scandals of the COVID-19 panademic: not only are patients not informed about the AI systems impacting their care, these systems are often poorly developed & reported and hardly tested

OMFG yes, how can we possibly be having these debates, still? It's especially questionable to argue against ethics review for step wedge trials right now, when it will very likely be one of the COVID19 vaccine trial options (as happened in West Africa for EVD). -KH

It's ALMOST like the way we do things when it comes to medical research is slow for a reason, and really shouldn't be "disrupted." 🤔 -KH

I’m not a clinician, but I wonder what other hypotheses could have been tested if we had not plowed tens of thousands of patients and dozens of studies into this one intervention. And when will there be enough evidence to revisit ongoing and planned trials of the same?
Just published @TheLancet
The largest study of hydroxychloroquine shows a significant increase in death (~35%) and >2-fold increase of serious heart arrhythmias. ~96,000 patients, ~15,000 on HCQ or CQ from 671 hospitals, 6 continents.

Here is a paper from 2017 on the laws ethics that affect clinical trials in African nations. It's definitely an overview, and I quibble with the flexible overlap of laws and ethics (which are two very different things), but it's a good place to start. -KH
