Why are coffee shops only a daytime thing? I genuinely wish there were coffee shops open until midnight where people could hang out, meet strangers, play board games, and have actual conversations. Basically the social atmosphere of a bar, but without the alcohol, loud music, or drunk people. Is that too much to ask?

Navi Pillay built her career attacking India. On Kashmir, her views are reprehensible. She has no sense of what India’s position in Kashmir is. And the civilizational history of India. India has replied to her officially many times. Multiple official rebuttals that she has refused to consider. Her award like every other Nobel Peace prize is a political award. There is no need of acknowledging her award by officials of Indian Government. Individuals who know her can do it in their personal capacity. No need to expect India to recognize her officially.

I used to supervise Euroclear and Clearstream so this @FT story caught my attention. @MESandbu suggests Euroclear is too big to destabilise and Belgium is to small to bear the risks of $360 billion restoration costs if ever the Central Bank of the Russian Federation succeeds in regaining rights to frozen or expropriated assets - which it will regain in any settlement of the Ukraine war.
What he fails to address entirely is Rule of Law and Private Property Rights. Sure these are inconvenient to thieves, but they are essential to global securities markets. Securities are called securities because they convey secure property interests and claims to their owners at law.
What will destabilise Euroclear is global perception that $44 TRILLION in securities assets under custody are now UNSAFE because the EU can decide to steal them.
Also, it’s irritating to see him suggest ECB can force Euroclear ‘to split off the risky part of its balance sheet into a separate entity’. That is just another form of theft.
Euroclear is licensed as a bank, but its core business in its charter and under specific Belgian legislation is as a fiduciary or trustee of OTHER PEOPLES’ ASSETS. Because it is so central to European and global markets, it is forbidden to take normal commercial risks. Fiduciary, custodian, and trust assets under Euroclear custody are NOT on Euroclear’s balance sheet because 100% ownership remains with the depositors. Even if Euroclear goes bust, customer assets will NOT form any part of the insolvency estate and can be reclaimed by depositors.
I designed and modernised the laws protecting Euroclear and Clearstream depositors. I pray they withstand these lawless attacks by would-be thieves.

Zelensky is not fighting to recover the Donbas, now a de facto Russian region occupied by ethnic Russians whose language and religion he has outlawed, but to realize the neocon dream of conquering and destroying the Russia state and taking control of her vast natural resources.
As they climb the escalation ladder supporting the actor-turned-warlord, Europe's "Coalition of the Willing" is threatening to blockade Russian Kaliningrad - as they boast about #Ukraine's drone and missile strikes on Russian refineries - assuming, somehow, this will lead to a Russian collapse.

Russia is the largest country in the world with the strongest military on the planet when you include their nuclear supremacy over the US, super EMP weapons and unmatched cyber offensive capabilites in the equation. They have accomplished this despite the fact that their population and defense spending are less than half the size of ours, while their GDP by PPP is less than one-fourth of ours.
It was Russia that defeated France in the Napoleonic Wars and defeated Nazi Germany in World War Two. Yet, we are led to believe they couldnt defeat NATO in days or weeks if they used their unconventional weapon systems against us?
The idea that the EU can lock them out of the European security system and keep fighting this proxy war against them in Ukraine without direct Russian military strikes against them is absurd. The longer this war goes on the greater the chance they will re-occupy the Baltics and then call for a cease-fire and NATO wont be able to do anything to stop them.
Not just NATO, not just Ukraine and Georgia. A lot more. We walked all over the Russians when they were down in the 1990s; basically taking over the country and looting it. We refused to welcome them into the geopolitical West; instead choosing to keep them out even when there was no dispute with them.
We attacked Serbia multiple times in the 1990s. We carried out many color revolutions (Serbia 2000, Georgia 2003, Ukraine 2004, 2014, Kyrgyztan 2005, Belarus 2006, Azerbaijan 2005). We armed and trained the Ukrainian armed forces. Then we rejected Putin’s ultimatum demanding Ukranian neutrality.
The road to the Russo-Western confrontation has been long and winding. The only reason it took so long for Moscow to throw down the gauntlet was because it was busy building up its strength.
Russia is now stronger than it has been since the Soviet capitulation. They have outgunned the West. Now they finish the job in Ukraine, then take the Baltics, and then retake their position at the head of the European table.
There is a reason why Russia was the dominant European power for decades after Napoleon, why the British were so intent on the Entente, why it was the Russians who defeated Hitler’s armies, and why Russia was the dominant power in Eurasia for a good half century thereafter.
The reason has to do with the deep intrinsic sources of Russian power, it’s central geopolitical position, and the imperial political culture that is responsible for Russia’s willingness to take on the entire geopolitical West.
Russia is the leader of the global insurgency against the West. When the West is defeated, the author of that defeat will be above all Moscow.
The West’s geopolitical error was to read temporary Russian weakness in the 1990s as a permanent state of affairs. It was incorrect even in 1994, as was pointed out already back then by no less an authority than Kennan himself. Instead, we listened to a Polish immigrant with an axe to grind.
