Severe damage to the aircraft involved in the FlyDubai incident, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, following the ‘forced’ descent (from 30,000ft to around 15,000ft in just approx 30 secs) during the time of an incident in the flight deck (involving pilots, and reportedly some passengers)

Anthropic CEO worries we're 6-12 months away from a swarm of AI agents capable of taking over the ENTIRE internet
Calls for immediate, global 1-2 year slowdown in AI development
Time to trust the people building the technology over the people merely investing in it
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

Global Affairs Canada says one Canadian citizen previously reported missing in Nepal has been located and is safe "after communications outages prevented earlier communications". Around 29 Cdn citizens and PRs are still missing in Nepal.

The new drone footage of the Gyirong border crossing location shows well the scale of the devastation.
Montage 1: I've marked the approximate location of the CCTV camera on these before-and-after grabs, and a box showing the roof of an existing building where a makeshift HQ has been set up. The red arrows show the direction of the water, and the checked box the approximate location of the border crossing building. How much of it will emerge from the mud when it's excavated?
Montage 2: The distinctive rock formations above and left of the large red building allow like-for-like comparison. It's as if the building simply had never existed.

✅ flyovers are awesome
✅ these crews are trained and skilled
✅ these are a normal thing in SA
✅ the CAA granted a permit to do this legally
❌ this wasn’t properly executed
❌ the margin between spectacular & mass casualty event was shockingly small
❌ this raises serious safety concerns
All are true statements.

1) Understandably many are confused where so much water came from with no lakes. We need to understand the scale of this. 🧵
> The glacier face that collapsed is ~1.5 kms wide & 1.4 kms deep. That height alone is nearly twice that of Burj Khalifa.
If this report is indeed true & the earthquake was caused by the landslide, it has to be a collapse of immense proportions!
> Either the whole glacier or mountain faces collapsed a kilometer or more into the Chhochen Khola below.
> Afaik there are no glacial lakes in this valley. The glacial collapse has to be that intense to generate that amount of water & energy rushing down.
It's still early to say, but this scenario holds true if it was generated here.

The term “witch hunt” is overused in politics. Perhaps not this time. Quite a bit of the British media should ask themselves some serious questions as to whether the tenor and volume of the coverage they gave to this man was remotely proportionate. Likewise there are questions for Cambridge- and whether they discharged their duty of care.
JASON ARDAY has been found dead.
Arday was found “unresponsive” at an address in Battersea on Friday afternoon. He was later pronounced dead.
A spokesman for the Met said officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at 3.12 p.m.
“Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
