Good call with @ZelenskyyUa today. Fully supported the call of President Zelenskyy for a ceasefire that would protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia The war has entered a new, grimmer phase. Russia is stalling on the battlefield and striking civilians far behind the front lines. I conveyed our solidarity with the Ukrainian people. And my full support for President Zelenskyy as he leads the fight for his people’s freedom. Ukraine will be front and centre at this week’s European Council. We will discuss its funding needs for the year ahead and how to mobilise fresh global support. This week, the EU will also provide further funding for drones and missiles. To strengthen Ukraine’s defences and protect its skies. We are also due to open two further clusters of chapters in the negotiations. The momentum is real.

Kyiv is in a blackout. No water either. Kharkiv’s thermal power plant is being bombed right now. Energy ceasefire? What energy ceasefire?

Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the weekend. This is an attack on Ukrainian civilians, plunging them into cold and darkness. The UK strongly supports President Trump's call today for a sustained energy ceasefire to start now. I discussed this with @zelenskyyUa yesterday: Ukraine is ready if Russia stops its attacks. This is the best route to get energy and fuel back into world markets.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine supports the energy ceasefire just announced by Trump but that he's still waiting for details. This basically confirms that Trump broke the news without speaking with Zelenskyy first.
I just spoke with @MarkJCarney, @alexstubb, and @SecGenNATO Mark Rutte. We discussed the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump. Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side. For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace. Thank you!

European Commissioner for Defence calls for the EU and Ukraine to break ranks with the US and pursue their own peace strategy.
Until now the EU was the only serious financial supporter of Ukraine, but was expecting the US political leadership will help to bring peace to Ukraine. A time comes when the EU together with Ukraine needs to elaborate and implement an independent Peace Strategy.

NYT: "Maros Sefcovic, the trade commissioner of the 27-nation bloc, said that the understanding could lead to China’s halving the number of hybrid gasoline-electric cars that it sends to the European Union in the next four years." This may seem like a victory, but the problem is a systemic one, and not sectoral. Because this agreement does not in any way address either China's demand imbalance or the overall role of the EU in absorbing that imbalance, it won't have much effect on overall EU manufacturing. All that will happen is a shift in the locus of net manufacturing imports from China, so that EU producers of hybrids will be better off, but at the expense of other EU manufacturers. For historical reasons, trade discussions are usually held on a product-by-product basis, but while that may make sense in a world of broadly balanced trade, it makes no sense in a world of deep, persistent imbalances. China runs huge surpluses not because it produces too many hybrids but rather because of its deep consumption imbalance and the very low household income share of GDP. As long as that happens, the only recourse for the EU, if it does not want to accept deindustrialization, is either to reduce its own household share of GDP (which would be politically disruptive as well as bad for the global economy) or to intervene in its external accounts in such a way that it reverses the competitive impact of China's low household share of GDP. nytimes.com/2026/10/09/busin…

President @ZelenskyyUa leads our nation in a time of war — a war for independence, freedom, and dignity. He has the support of the Ukrainian people, and they have the right to decide. Statements from abroad only confirm that he is doing his job well. He deserves support.

Trump does appear to be very angry with Zelensky. The situation is strongly reminiscent of the February 2025 confrontation. But his mood can shift rapidly, as Putin also knows, particularly when it reflects immediate political pressures such as the midterm elections. This may look like Putin’s moment of triumph: he has secured an economic deal, albeit a modest one, before a peace settlement, departing from Washington’s previous position. He is also hearing the message he has wanted to hear for years: Zelensky must go. Yet whatever Moscow hopes or believes, Washington cannot simply remove Zelensky. The central uncertainty is how the current confrontation will affect his domestic standing and, in turn, Kyiv’s position on Russia’s demands. Putin may believe that developments are moving in his favour, but he is unlikely to count on Trump to deliver the outcome he wants. Instead, he will see Trump’s current stance as creating more favourable conditions for intensifying military pressure, aimed primarily at triggering an internal political breakdown in Ukraine rather than achieving a battlefield breakthrough. In his view, this pressure must be accompanied by efforts to cultivate Trump and make limited, tactical accommodations that could yield longer-term benefits.

As the dust settles, it becomes evident the Trump-Putin deal will have a minimal impact on energy markets. Russia’s refinery production is badly damaged by Ukrainian strikes. The world burns 30 million diesel barrels per day. Russia can’t keep up. What matters is politics. 🧵

Europeans need to decide whether its pledge to stand by Ukraine “as long as it takes” has an upper limit. If it doesn’t, they need to seriously step up on all fronts (military, financial, sanctions) to ensure Ukraine can stay in the fight — possibly until Trump leaves office.

Confirmed: The Miami talks have concluded. Ukrainian negotiators are already on their way back to Kyiv. The talks were initially scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The first day ran longer than expected after the news of the diesel deal.

Horrible week in Ukraine. At least 17 dead today in Zaporizhzhya following a gliding bomb strike on an apartment building. 22 people killed on Tuesday in Prykuly, 130km east of Kyiv, 32 civilians dead in Kramatorsk on Thursday and 4 more killed in Kyiv the same day.
