ALT A situation overview is provided alongside the official track forecast from the 5am National Hurricane Center update. Tropical Storm Ian currently over the western Caribbean is forecast to strengthen while turning to the northwest today. Ian turns northerly on Tuesday and continues to strengthen while emerging in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Ian is heading into a very favorable environment for it to rapidly intensify and it should be a major hurricane by Monday night or early Tuesday. There remains a large amount of uncertainty in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon and beyond, so further adjustments to the track are possible – it is too early to let your guard down.
