She led in a time it felt uncomfortable. Being a first occurs because one stands on the shoulders of unknown giants who came before. But being the face is uncomfortable but inspiring for others. Thank you, Sian. It’s bigger than you will ever know but the impact can be seen.
"To the young girl who simply loved refereeing, we did it. Thank you, football."
Assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis MBE has announced her retirement from officiating after a remarkable career, to take up the role of Senior Manager - Women Referees with The FA.
Since reaching the Premier League in 2010, at the time only the second female to ever do so, Massey-Ellis has officiated on over 150 top-flight matches. Alongside a plethora of domestic milestones, including five Women's FA Cup finals and becoming the first female appointed to both the FA Community Shield and Men’s FA Cup final, she also has an impressive international resume. She has been involved in three UEFA Women’s Champions League finals, four UEFA Women's EUROs, two FIFA Women’s World Cups and she was also the first English woman appointed to a men's European fixture.

LAW CHANGES 2026/27
An attacker challenges a defender, who falls to the ground in the middle of the field and pretends to have been fouled, despite there being no contact. The referee stops play, awards a free kick for the defender’s team and shows a yellow card (YC) to the attacker, which is their second YC in the match and results in a red card (RC).
May the video assistant referee (VAR) inform the referee about a ‘clear and obvious error’ so that the incident is reviewed?

After an unsuccessful pass by Team A, the ball is heading out for a throw-in. While it is still on the field of play, very close to the touchline, a ball boy/girl catches the ball in an attempt to help restart the game quickly.

A defender competes with an attacker for the ball and commits a careless tackle outside the penalty area which denies the opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO). The referee allows play to continue as the ball goes to another attacking player who gains possession of the ball, takes a shot and scores a goal.

To prevent time-wasting, the player being substituted must leave the field of play within TEN SECONDS of the substitution board being shown or, where there is no board, of the referee’s signal for the substitution to take place.
Where the ten seconds are exceeded and the substitute is prevented from entering the field of play, the player being substituted is only cautioned (yellow card) if the delay is excessive.
