⚖️Which way to go for the truth and justice?
Consideration should be given to the following:
1. A Tribunal of Inquiry has stronger powers to compel a witness from outside of Ireland to attend and give evidence under the Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) legislation.
Whereas:
2. Under section 16 of the Commissions of Investigation Act 2004, a Commission of Investigation does not have the same powers to compel a person resident in another country such as the USA to attend and give evidence.
Therefore the opposition's position that a Commission of Investigation is architecturally weaker and flawed are critical points.
The same points the families & advocates have repeatedly made.

A man who used his gifts not just to enrich our culture, but to stand in solidarity with those who have struggled for justice, equality and Irish freedom.

From there, we head in to the Dáil to listen to the statements on the inquiry in to Children’s Health Ireland. @CarrollJennifer @SimonHarrisTD you both know what was agreed to, and you both know the current recommendations mean this inquiry won’t be fit for purpose if you push on with it as is.

What actually happened?
🚫 No Tribunal of Inquiry. The Minister did not bring the promised proposal for a Tribunal of Inquiry in principle to Cabinet. Instead, a Commission of Investigation has been recommended.
🚫 No agreed mediator. The Minister appointed a facilitator without agreement or collaboration with parents and advocacy organisations, despite the commitment to an agreed mediator.
🚫 No independent clinical expert. Despite discussions about appointing an independent clinician to assist the process, no such appointment was made.
🚫 No direct consultation with children and young people. The scoping report identifies no children or young adults living with scoliosis or spina bifida who were directly consulted.
🚫 No further meaningful engagement with families. Families requested further engagement before the terms of reference were brought before the Dáil. That engagement did not take place.
Families came to the table in good faith. We are not asking for new promises. We are asking for the commitments made on 12 November to be honoured.
@SimonHarrisTD, you were an active participant in that meeting and supported the commitments made to families.
Simon Harris, you made a promise to our children in 2017 that was never delivered. You made commitments again in November 2025. Do not fail our children twice. Honour your word.

If Iain Duncan Smith really cares about truth and justice, I will ask the Court Services for permission to show him an MOD document in which his friend, Captain Robert Nairac, is accused by a fellow, serving British officer of planning and executing the Miami Showband murders.
The IRA were terrorists, not soldiers. Their campaign of murder and bombing was not a war of equals, and no amount of historical revisionism will ever make it so. Labour’s Northern Ireland Troubles Bill risks allowing the IRA to rewrite history while British veterans face the prospect of being dragged through investigations decades after serving their country.
Where is the accountability for the IRA? Where are the answers from the Irish Government about those who fled across the border, the support they received and the supply of weapons?
I served in the British Army. My friend, Captain Robert Nairac, was murdered by the IRA. His body has never been recovered. His family still deserves to know what happened to him and where he lies.
The IRA cannot be allowed to portray its campaign of terror as justified by the Good Friday Agreement. Peace does not retrospectively legitimise murder. There is no moral equivalence between terrorists and those who served to uphold the law.
This Bill is a betrayal of our veterans and of families still waiting for the truth.
