Gaza correspondent, work for the BBC for the last 23 years, what is written here represents my own views

For me, 7 October is not just a story I report. It is deeply personal. My father, my brothers and my sisters are still in Gaza. Every strike, every displacement order, every night of fear reaches my own family. The Gaza I grew up in has been shattered. People I knew are gone. Places filled with memories have disappeared. Three years later, my hope is painfully simple: that my family can stay on the land we call home. And my deepest fear is that one day, they may be forced to leave it.

For two million Palestinians in Gaza, 7 October is the day everything changed. Hamas launched an unprecedented attack whose consequences were never fully calculated and Gaza has paid an enormous price ever since. Three years later, Gaza is no longer the place it was. It may never be again.

Analysis: Talks were 'long and extremely difficult' A senior Hamas official and member of the movement’s negotiating team told the BBC that the talks were “long and extremely difficult”, with Hamas insisting on the wording “inventorying and storing weapons” under Palestinian oversight rather than handing them over to Israel. It remains too early to judge whether the agreement will be fully implemented or whether all parties will honour their commitments. But if it holds, it could mark the first credible step towards ending a war that has lasted for nearly three years and opening the way for a broader political process.

In Gaza, the announcement has been met with little public enthusiasm. After years of failed ceasefires and collapsed agreements, many Palestinians have grown deeply sceptical of new political breakthroughs. Some residents shared their views online saying they are less interested in the details of negotiations than in whether this deal will actually end the war, allow displaced families to return home and bring lasting relief. For many, confidence in both Hamas and Israel remains low, with previous agreements having repeatedly broken down before delivering meaningful improvements on the ground.

After months of marathon talks, Hamas has, for the first time, accepted a framework of the Board of Peace’s plan to completely disarm in Gaza. The plan provides for the inventorying and storage of its remaining heavy weapons under Palestinian supervision, potentially removing the most significant obstacle to advancing the Trump-backed peace initiative for Gaza. The move comes soon after Hamas concluded leadership elections that brought Gaza-based leader Khalil al-Hayya to the head of the movement. Palestinian officials involved in the talks believe the new leadership was prepared to take what he described as the most consequential political decision in Hamas’s history, driven by the devastating humanitarian conditions facing more than two million Palestinians in Gaza.

“Whoever is behind it, the launching of rockets from southern Lebanon is an irresponsible and suspicious act. It endangers Lebanon’s security and safety and gives Israel pretexts to continue its attacks against it. We will not allow the country to be dragged into new adventures, and we will take all necessary measures to stop those responsible and protect the Lebanese people.”

Eight Israeli air strikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs, according to local reports. The strikes came less than an hour after Hezbollah said it had fired rockets towards northern Israel.

Hezbollah says it fired precision rockets and drones at the Mishmar HaCarmel site south of Haifa in northern Israel overnight. The group says the attack was in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and in response to ongoing Israeli strikes, calling it a “legitimate act of self-defence.”

Gazans say they never imagined Israeli airstrikes would return so quickly. The brief sense of relief that followed the ceasefire has swiftly turned into fear and uncertainty. Residents have begun hiding inside their tents and homes, while prices of basic goods have already started to rise in several areas, reflecting growing anxiety and disappointment over how fast the situation has deteriorated.
