🤯 This is why Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) isn't working in YOUR school! 🤯 MTSS was designed to be a systemic model to merge general ed and special ed, aimed to PREVENT reading failure. 💭 Instead, we are doing a lot of INTERVENTION rather than PREVENTION. 🤔

H.E. faculty in many fields (medicine) teach what is aligned w/science bc damage will be done if they do not. Medical professionals take an oath to do no harm. EPP faculty must do the same. Teach what aligns w/the science so future teachers do no harm! Lit.=freedom! #TRLConf2023

Why are we simply handing out hard copies of novels to our whole classroom? We're excluding anyone who doesn't have foundational reading skills, or who has visual impairment, or who's multilingual. Instead we need to plan for barriers, so all students can access the text.

The ABC’s of SOR!🍎 Over the last 5 years, many researchers have contributed to my knowledge and understanding of how children learn to read. To help you learn the research, I have created the “ABC’s of SOR” so you can follow the research, too! PS- this idea stemmed from our family’s favourite road trip game: pick a theme &name one item for each letter of the alphabet! (Ex. Apple, banana, cantaloupe…) My family failed miserably when I chose the theme “Science of Reading researchers!”😂 Please feel free to add the name of a researcher who has impacted your SOR journey! @KJWinEducation @natwexler @janhasbrouck @sstollar6 @lifelonglit @DTWillingham @kymyona_burk @ReadingShanahan @MJLiben @SoniaCabell

Calkins has to answer for her choices and impact, but our whole sector needs to look in the mirror - especially system and building leaders; why did so many just 'go with the flow'. Courage and vulnerability are needed. Yes, move forward, but don't build on cowardly foundation

The argument that it’s okay for professional educators to omit phonics from instruction despite the research because the journalist failed to describe other features of quality reading instruction is dopey.

I admire all the teachers out there who — for years — have been thinking critically about how to teach reading, who tried to follow scientific research, sometimes despite what “experts” and supervisors said to do. A few who shared their experiences in threads this week:
