I wanted to share an update on a story that’s been getting attention in Canada: the story of Louka Berman (known online as the “raccoon guy”: @MaggotX66 ) and Pepper, a young raccoon he rescued in Montreal. In May, Louka found Pepper injured at a construction site after she and her mother were shot with a crossbow. The mother didn’t survive. Louka nursed Pepper back to health with the intention of releasing her, but she kept returning to him. They formed a strong bond, videos of them together went viral, and Louka has been caring for her since. Earlier this month, Quebec’s Environment Ministry served Louka with a search warrant and a fine, alleging he was keeping a wild animal without a permit. Officials searched his apartment, but Pepper wasn’t there at the time. Because of a raccoon rabies outbreak in the province and limited sanctuary options, Louka fears she could be euthanized if seized. He has been hiding her in parks, fighting the charges, and working toward obtaining the proper permits so he can create a proper wildlife sanctuary for her and other animals in similar situations. The story has been covered by the Montreal Gazette and Global News, and there’s a fundraiser and petition supporting them. Just today (October 20), wildlife officials tried again to take Pepper. According to Louka, they failed to get her but damaged plants and his balcony while trying to access the property from the back. He has said he won’t let them take her. The story has also drawn broader media interest. A developer involved with a Solana memecoin created around Pepper’s story ($PEPPER) interview to CBC, Canada’s national broadcaster, discussing the coin and Pepper’s situation. The coin has been used by some in the community to raise awareness and direct support toward Louka. Pepper is still with Louka for now.
