Excellent article from @matt_dathan on HMP Oakwood, currently the best prison in the country.
👉Very high expectations of prisoner behaviour
👉Lots of incentives for those who behave well
👉Strong leadership
👉Well-trained, effective staff

Freedom is not a word usually associated with prisons.
But in HMP Oakwood, it was a word that kept on being mentioned by inmates when @TheTimes visited shortly before Christmas.
Behind the usual high security fences and air-locked doors, the prisoners run the show - from the drug recovery wing, the woodwork shop, the in-house media centre, the farm and garden centre and even the visitation unit.
But is running a relaxed regime the right way to run a prison? Read on to find out more:

With prisons full, sentences in a queue, people being released after serving 40%, prisons with dangerous inspection results & probation on their knees - it’s time, literally right now, for a brave government to start the conversation about what punishment can & should look like.

The headline doesn’t quite tell the whole story.
Oakwood Prison is the biggest in the UK, with 80% of prisoners there judged ‘high risk’..
…and yet, it’s rated the ‘best’ in the country - a rare ray of hope in a prison system full of gloom.
Here’s why: telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08…

It is also a reflection of the breakdown in staff-prisoner relationships across the estate- the backbone of safe, secure and meaningful prisons- which is about recruitment, training, leadership and management

Worth considering that 40% of the average custodial sentence length (ACSL) in 2023 is still two weeks longer than 50% of the ACSL was in 2013.

Watch this it’s fascinating - I asked James Timpson what he’d do about prisons and sentencing if he was in charge. He believes only a third of prisoners in jail should definitely be there. He’s now in charge of prisons (but not sentencing).

How Norway’s reformed, humane and successful prison system puts Britain’s model - and our posturing politicians - to shame. My report from Oslo for @theipaper inews.co.uk/news/world/norwa…

The Sentencing Council should for most offences be asked to revise its guidelines to bring the average sentence length back down by a third - to the level it was 10 years ago. 6/7

Our prisons should not hold more than 79,507 people. They currently hold 87,973.
Seven prisons are at 150+% capacity.
You can’t improve a human in conditions like that. You can’t rehabilitate. You can’t reform.
We are simply warehousing people, at huge expense, before release.
The prison population in England and Wales stands at 87,973. There are 37 more people in prison today than there were last week, and 4,129 more than this time last year.
The prison estate should not hold more than 79,507 people, there are currently 8,466 men and women held above this level.
