ALT This month we published a review on the separation of children in YOIs, a joint review of education in YOIs with Ofsted and UNs for HMP Manchester and HMP Winchester. We published reports on The Verne, Hatfield, Drake Hall and STHFs at WJF, Manston, and KIU, an IRP on Bedford and 2 blogs, one on good work at Drake Hall, the other on a decade of decline in children’s custody. On Drake Hall, Inspector Jonathan Ticker said: “The key to the prison’s success was an excellent range of support, care and interventions. The impact was twofold; it not only helped women to cope with life inside, but improved their chances of a successful release.” Winchester is the second prison in 2 weeks to be issued with a UN, swiftly following Manchester. Both had very high rates of serious assaults. Manchester was rat infested and at Winchester, inspectors questioned if damp, mouldy cells were fit for habitation. HMP Hatfield got top marks in our latest inspection, being ‘good’ in all healthy prison areas.
