God blesses and uses different types of preaching.. not only just expository preaching.
BUT..
I would say that the number one reason that men choose to preach topically instead of expository is the amount of work and study involved.
It is easy to find a verse or two to go along with your 3 points and illustrations, but to dive into the text..it takes you out of it and makes it about the Word.
Expository preaching does not have to be boring and dry. The Bible message should be passionate and powerful because it is the Word that is alive and being expounded upon.
Expository preaching has helped build up our church growth from 87 people to nearly 600 every Sunday morning. People are hungry for the Word.
Try it.

My heart truly breaks for the victims and the families in this community.
One day, there will be no more killing of the innocent. No more confusion of genders. No more breaking into schools and churches. No more pain of earthly loss. No more schools with metal detectors. No more funerals. No death. No crimes committed.
All wrongs will be made right.
Jesus will fix it all. #PrayersForNashville

“1. Rightly divide the Word of truth.
Expository, biblical preaching declares what the Bible says, not what we want it to say.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)
2. Exalt Jesus Christ. In every message, I want to lift up the cross and point both saved and lost listeners to Jesus.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (Col. 1:18)
3. Equip the saints. It is the Word of God that brings spiritual maturity for life and service.
And he gave…pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (Eph. 4:11–12)
Pastors, I encourage and challenge you, "Preach the Word!" Preach it rightly. Preach it to lift up Christ. And preach it to equip God's people to spiritual maturity.”

Preach the Word.
In biblical context.
In historic context.
With love.
Without personal agenda.
With cultural relevance.
With practical application.
With humility.
With the fear of God.
Without the fear of man.
In light of the grand narrative of Scripture.
Preach the Word.

Penal Substitutionary Atonement: Postmodernists, Liberal Theologians, and every demon in Hell hates this doctrine more than any other single doctrine in the Bible!

Legalism and license have the same root idol. They are both efforts in self-exaltation. And the gospel of Jesus is the antidote to both.

Redemption- (marketplace term) speaks of moving from bondage to freedom.
Regeneration- (biology term) speaks of passing from death to life.
Justification- (law term) speaks of moving from a state of condemnation to innocence.

All this arguing about expository vs topical preaching could be simplified with one statement.
You are not at liberty to take a text of scripture, divorce it from its context, then use it to support a point obviously not intended by the author.

As one man put it,
“A Biblical sermon is that which requires that it expound Scripture by deriving from a specific text main points and subpoints that disclose the thought of the author, cover the scope of the passage, and are applied to the lives of the listeners.”

Once you've heard a steady diet of truly contextual biblical preaching, it is so difficult, sad, and sometimes maddening to hear man-centered, opinion-based rants with a few loosely-related, cherry-picked Bible verses thrown in.
Preach the Word! That's what people need.

Preaching 101: The more clearly your sermon points can be seen in the text, the more authority you have to give them.
Put negatively: The harder a congregation has to work to see the points in the text, the less likely they are to believe what the preacher is saying.

The text is the sermon but the context determines the explanation before the exposition.

If we believe in the plenary verbal inspiration of the Bible then the study of the grammar of the text is essential in a thorough expository sermon.
