This a cinema in Göktürk, Turkey after the extreme rain. Ironic considering that Hollywood has barely engaged with the climate Crisis, in the weeks after one of the biggest films to ever do so, Digger, was savaged by critics.

May I suggest we all read this? Evidence based Frightening Action needed right now. The report estimates that limiting warming to approximately 1.8°C rather than 4.4°C could prevent 1.89 billion disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) being lost by 2100.

Today in @Nature, we report a new approach to studying human brain development and modeling disease in vivo. Human neural #assembloids and #organoids have opened new ways to study development in vitro, but they also have important limitations. Transplantation can provide a more physiological environment, yet human cortical cells then develop within a rodent brain that matures much faster, constraining their growth and integration. To address some of these limitations and obtain more advanced functional readouts relevant to disease biology, we generated #apallial mice, in which ~98% of the cortex and hippocampus fail to form, creating space for transplanted human cortical organoids to grow and integrate extensively. We call these #xenocortical mice (XCX). Nearly 7 years in the making. Congratulations to an extraordinary team and wonderful collaborators! Link to the article below 👇

We have a solution for this if colleagues send me a message I can start sharing a testing release. #FLIM file export interrogator
Anyone found a quick way to open #Leica FLIM images from the Falcon outside of LAS X? We need to manipulate the raw data for many of our projects! We have the Picoquant export but that is way to slow for hundreds of files!

My commenting on the climate and ecological emergency, is becoming personally disturbing to me, because although I have been aware from when I was 10 years old, 56 years ago, in 1970, that we "could" be heading towards global catastrophe, unless we changed our unsustainable exploitation of natural system. None of this was inevitable. I say "could" because as long as the dangers were acknowledged and acted upon in a rational way, no catastrophe was locked in. This is a straight forward rational process. In 1972 there was the first UN Environment Conference in which these dangers were recognised them, and an Action Plan was agreed to avert these dangers. The 1992 Rio Earth Summit, where the UNFCCC, framework on climate change was signed, only happened because no action had been taken on the 1972 Action Plan. Remember, these were UN events, where governments of the world quite freely recognised these dangers, and willingly agreed action to prevent catastrophe. That we have a full-blown emergency now, is purely that governments have failed to take the action, that they willingly agreed to, at these conferences and other world meetings/conferences. This is hard to understand in rational terms. If someone drives on a high speed motorway or highway, or whatever they are called in that country, no high speed crash is inevitable at the end as long as the driver follows the signs, and slows down at the end of their high speed drive. Same on train tracks etc, at the end of plane journeys. It only becomes catastrophic, if a driver fails to slow down, and just drives on at speed. Essentially, this is what our governments have done. They were told danger was ahead, if they carried on with business as usual, but they claimed they recognised the danger, and would change from the path they were on. Except they didn't, they carried on at full speed, and failed to slow down and change direction, although they had agreed to that, on multiple occasions. Self-evidently, it puts you in an invidious position, to have to say to our leaders, excuse me, but you are recklessly driving us into the wall. No one, especially a political leader, likes to be told they are behaving like a lunatic, and putting us all in grave danger. You will get all sorts of disapproval, as it is not seen as the done thing, to challenge a major leader, with a gigantic ego, that there something seriously wrong with their judgement. Of course, those who don't want the suicidal course we are on mentioned, want to deter people from pointing it out. So they use all sorts of bullying tactics, to discourage you, and to give up calling out the danger. So constantly pointing out the danger, and reminding those in charge, that they are acting with an insane disregard to the danger, makes those honestly calling it out, are placed in a very high stress situation. Where you will be accused of being alarmist, needlessly causing panic or of having a hidden political or ideologic danger. This is why our governments are behaving so dishonestly and oppressively, because by not acknowledging the situation, the danger, they put all the responsibility onto activists, to point out the dangerous recklessness of our political masters.

Generative AI doesn’t run on magic. It runs on massive data pipelines built on privacy violations by design. Our new @Amnesty report exposes how big tech’s AI systems are powered by surveillance, data extraction, and abuse of people’s rights, at scale. We researched the models powering some of the most popular publicly available standalone generative AI tools, including GPT 3 by Open AI, Google’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama, DeepSeek and tools by Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. This is not innovation at any cost. It comes at a high price: our human rights. Read the report: amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

The arXiv one-year ban reveals that a lot of people who submit papers don't like...doing research. Reading papers is fun. Talking about papers in a group is interesting. Synthesizing the literature is rewarding. There are lot of careers don't involve those things & pay better.
