To be successful in your medical career is one thing, to be a woman in the field of forensic pathology is totally a different thing, and to be the first female chief medical examiner of NYC is a whole new level! Dr. Barbra Samson, has a lot to tell us about that.

In America, freedom is not to be given. It is not to be bestowed. It is our right.
That includes the fundamental freedom of a woman to be able to make decisions about her own body.

The clinical significance of high-grade PIN is NOT as a precursor (à la DCIS) with increased risk of developing prostate cancer but as a surrogate marker of co-existing unsampled prostate cancer.

In addition to the talks from the Faculty, #ESPCongress includes abstract presentations, poster or oral!
You are more than welcome to already browse those abstracts, as they are published in a supplement edition of the Virchows Archiv!

Clear cell metaplasia in a sigmoid polyp from my colleague @edinpath. Resembles secretory endometrium and perhaps Sertoli cells! No clinical importance but pretty! Pleomorphic CIN. This is just a LG CIN showing striking pleomorphism of basal cells.
Limited studies, but not associated with aggressive behaviour and may even represent a degenerative change.
Can be confused for early stromal invasion when cross cut.

Depending on how strict you are with your defining criteria of a mentor, you might never find one. But if you'd like to hear my unpopular opinion, you don't need one. There will always be people to learn from, attendings and fellow residents alike. One thing I'd like to add: don't forget that negative examples are also instructive. I have come to the conclusion over the years that I'll try to educate myself as best as I can, learning from everyone willing to teach, regardless how little and inconsistent, and then, as an attending, try to fill the gaps, do better for my residents, maybe even become the mentor I never had for others, who knows. I find this to be good motivation. And, at the end of the day, honestly that's all you need, motivation. Because learning resources are available virtually everywhere nowadays. Focus on reading, learning, taking responsibility with your cases as if it were your name only on the signed out report, learn from the people around you, good and bad, however they are, don't be afraid to ask your attendings "stupid" questions at sign out (always remember: it is your right to learn!) and you should be fine 😉 The internet and social medial (especially #PathTwitter) allow for more networking opportunities nowadays so take advantage of that as much as you can. You may find "mentorship", or as I would put it pearls of wisdom, in places you've never imagined.
