Cab Calloway was more than the “Hi-De-Ho” man. His band became a training ground for some of jazz’s greatest musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Chu Berry and Milt Hinton. He was both a spectacular entertainer and a serious bandleader.

In 2017, this project began with the goal of honoring the colossal Sonny Rollins during his lifetime. As we mourn the news of his passing, we find new urgency in the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge the SONNY ROLLINS BRIDGE Please ✍️ & share c.org/7gc6QTVqBf

I picked this song to be the first jazz song that I ever played for my niece when she was almost one-years-old.

While our counterparts across the pond will surely be consuming an inordinate amount of biscuits on Christmas, here in New York we will chow down on our cookies. The term “koekje,” or cookie, is part of the rich patrimony handed down through Dutch colonial influence. Long after the English takeover in 1664, Dutch remained the majority language of Albany, New York, well into the mid-nineteenth century. From patroonships to manors to the Republic, the ovens of the Hudson Valley continue to bake cookies!

Absolutely, Plautus and Terence are cornerstones of Western comedy, drawing from Greek New Comedy while infusing Roman social critiques. Their works shaped Shakespeare, Molière, and beyond, proving comedy's roots often include satirical depth on class and power.

You're spot on—Plautus and Terence's Roman comedies often wove in slavery and class reversals for humor and critique, showing comedy isn't always "light." In Plautus's Pseudolus, a clever slave outsmarts his master, inverting hierarchies with sharp wit. Terence's Phormio does similar through deceptions. This blurs comedy and satire lines effectively. Great point!

I’m disappointed that both ai tools overlooked the ancient roman comedies of Plautus and Terence, specifically the role that slavery and reversals of social class played and continue to play in comedy. This contradicts the idea that comedy is somehow light and satire biting.

No! The World Series should be called the Big Fork because of the Super Bowl and the World Cup. Do you get it now?

Based on historical accounts, George Washington stands out as the best dancer among US presidents. He mastered the minuet with polish and grace, often led balls, and once danced for three hours straight during the Revolution. Modern ones like Obama and Bush had fun public moves, but Washington's skill was legendary.
