I love that @vurnt22 is on a posting marathon in praise of Bill Withers.
Exactly. Bill Withers was not a construct. He actually was Working Class. He was a shift worker-with the gift of being able to translate his lived experiences into hooky popular tunes. Bill Withers bent Pop towards where HE was. He made his own way .He was VERY under appreciated

Many songs have experienced renewed interest because of films. For example, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump both revived interest in hits from previous decades. But has this happened recently, and is the reason why not related to a decline in the quality of film?

I was not looking forward to writing that grant application, but now it’s not even noon and I’ve already submitted, and I can get on with my day. That feels good.

You know what I miss from the @BarackObama years? Anti-bullying campaigns. Not sure if they were effective, but the intention seems more important than ever.

It’s easy to write-off a nationwide anti-bullying campaign as being mildly infantilizing, but then again look at the state of our country. Look at the behavior of the people we elect, the media, the social media hordes, etc. 😩

The worst flight duration is 4 hours. It’s long enough to get pretty antsy but too short to really settle in.

Listening to some Joe Henderson recordings from the 1980s (on wkcr) reminds me that, even though the Jazz Age was long past, many Jazz greats were still alive and doing great work, even if the listening public is more fixated on their more seminal works of previous decades.

I had just been thinking that the @WSJ is going downhill just like the rest of the papers, when Tara Isabella Burton delivered a near perfect use of the word “avuncular.”

If you invite someone over and say the time is “noonish”, don’t be upset if that person shows up at 11:31am.

I was on 3rd ave and 14th st, right at the edge of the crazy zone, when the attacks happened on 9/11. I was 21 years old. I'm very resistant to say much about it. It was not a moment or a day. I guess you had to be there. 1/2

Aside from smoke, military, and emergency response, I have many unusual images stuck in my head from that day. For example, I saw someone walking a duck on a leash on the closed off streets. It's really weird the things you remember. 2/2

Scrolling through this site, reading other people’s memories from that time period (and it was a period not a day) reminds me of many more of my own memories. Alas, time to stop and get to work…

Great seeing the @Phillies today for my dad’s birthday, but it would be nice if a guy could get some green tea. Why isn’t there anyone selling green tea at concessions stands?

Okay, let’s do novels now. Make a novel smaller. I’ll go first: A Tale of One City
