“Rollins, who had begun his career as a rather truculent renegade, an outsider who seemed to like it that way, despite joyous onstage transmissions, will ultimately be remembered as a humanist…” downbeat.com/news/detail/son…

"New Orleans named an airport after Louis Armstrong, and in Warsaw the airport is named for Frédéric Chopin. There’s a bridge in Pittsburgh named for Andy Warhol and one in Georgia for Otis Redding. Sonny Rollins would stand easily among them."

Now all we need is for #NYC to finally rename the Williamsburg Bridge, the "Sonny Rollins" bridge.
It's official... This morning New York City officially and permanently co-named West 8th Street as Jimi Hendrix Way. 💜 The new street sign unveiled today at the corner of 6th Avenue and West 8th Street is just down the street from Jimi Hendrix's landmark Electric Lady Studios in the heart of Greenwich Village. Stay Experienced!

NYT: “Rollins remained dissatisfied with his musical voice. So he did the most unexpected thing. From 1959 to 1961, he retired from public performance and spent upward of 15 hours a day practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge’s pedestrian walkway.” nytimes.com/2026/06/14/opini…

I'd definitely vote for this. Who is more New York, after all, than Sonny Rollins? He turned Williamsburg bridge into an artistic landmark and part of the mythology of jazz, unlike many other true New Yorkers, he was even born in the city.

“We can certainly name a bridge after Sonny Rollins.”
Thank you very much, Ned Rothenberg!
