Pope Pius XII receives the Kabaka of Buganda, Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Mutesa II, and his queen, Damali Catherine Nnakawombe, during a private audience at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, in August 1951.
The meeting brought together the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the monarch of Buganda, one of the historic kingdoms of the Great Lakes region. Mutesa II had ascended the throne in 1939 and was crowned in November 1942. Although Buganda retained its royal court and traditional institutions, the kingdom existed within the British Protectorate of Uganda.
A decade after this photograph was taken, Uganda achieved independence on October 9, 1962. Mutesa II subsequently became the country’s first President in 1963, while retaining his position as Kabaka of Buganda, until he was deposed by Prime Minister Milton Obote in 1966.

BREAKING: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee is halting the state’s remaining execution for 2026 and ordering a third-party review after officials fail to execute death row inmate Christa Pike.
Pike received two syringes of lethal injection Wednesday night but remained alive and could be heard snoring, according to her attorneys and media witnesses. Her legal team filed an emergency motion to stop the execution as the situation unfolded.
Pike was later transported to an off-site medical facility.
Lee says the state has a responsibility to ensure executions are carried out legally, constitutionally, and effectively.

When your biological son is a bishop ❤️
Bishop Simon Peter of Uganda in a warm embrace with his mother on the day of his Mass of Thanksgiving after his episcopal ordination.
Such a beautiful moment of mother and son. May God continue to bless them now and always. Amen 🙏🏾
What do you think 🤔 the mother will call him: My son or My Lord (Bishop)?

🇺🇳#UNGA81 is over.
Two fun facts from the 194 speeches given in the GA hall: The longest speech? Donald Trump at 5,203 words. The shortest? Nicaragua at 574.
In total 411,697 words were spoken from the rostrum in the General Assembly Hall.
The site is now complete.
Every speaker is confirmed, and every one of the 194 speeches is searchable, with links to the UN's own transcript and video.
Want to know who mentioned Sudan, for example, (67 of them) or AI (116)? It's all there.
The Wire is closed, no more sweeps of X, but the posts from the week stay up.

A single Permanent Member of the Security Council can block a resolution, even if a majority of Members support it. That’s known as the veto right. 🇺🇳
France and Mexico have introduced an initiative to suspend this right: Permanent Members would pledge to voluntarily refrain from using the veto in situations involving mass atrocities.
The goal: to keep the Council from being paralyzed when faced with the most serious crimes.
Major progress this year: for the first time, another Permanent Member of the Security Council, the United Kingdom, joined the initiative, which now enjoys the support of 128 nations.

Dangote's Faith in God.
He has three daughters only. He is from a typically conservative African society where male children are regarded as the continuity of a man and his family.
Asked if he wants a male child, Dangote said it is not a problem to him. He is fine with his three daughters who are actively involved in his business empire.
More importantly, Alhaji said God is the one that gives male and female children. If God doesn't give you anything you prayed for, don't push too hard because you don't know what could happen with getting it. Now, that's faith.
The richest man in Africa and one of the wealthiest in the world is grateful to God for three daughters. Somewhere in Umudioka, Sabon Tasha, Okokomaiko, and elsewhere some broke, poor dude is harassing his wife for a male child, some couples with 5 female children are combing all the prayer houses and ministries looking for miracle for a baby boy with marathon fasts and prayers. Issorite.

I am very intrigued by the entry of Ambassador Olara Otunnu @OOtunnu_ into the race for @UN Secretary-General. While the conventional wisdom is that it is the turn of Latin America, Otunnu, were he to somehow scale the informal hurdle of rotation politics , would make an excellent Secretary-General. As vastly experienced as he is competent, Otunnu became Uganda’s Ambassador to the UN in 1980 at age 29! He was sharp, young, and much respected despite his youth. He introduced the informal straw polling used ever since as a method of measuring support for candidates among the members of the Security Council, which really determines who gets the job and then makes a “recommendation” to the UN General Assembly. Otunnu later became Uganda’s Foreign Minister. At @Makerere , Otunnu was a student union leader who opposed the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s rule. He was expelled from the university and narrowly escaped arrest by slipping into a neighboring country. From there on, he was to be educated @UniofOxford and later, @Harvard on a Fulbright Scholarship.
In 1996 he was a strong competitor of Kofi Annan and others for the role, but, his native Uganda and its President @KagutaMuseveni opposed his candidacy. Today, now 75, he is Museveni’s candidate. How times change. Otunnu is world class, and I wish him the best.
During my UN career, Otunnu had invited me to return to UN Headquarters (where I had earlier been a Political Affairs Officer in the UN’s Department of Peacekeeping Operations headed at the time by Kofi Annan as Under-Secretary-General) and join his team, where he was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children in Armed Conflict and Under-Secretary-General , as his Special Assistant and Senior Adviser around 2001 when I was serving as Legal Adviser and Spokesman of the International Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania, but that invitation ultimately did not work out for reasons I will be sharing in my forthcoming memoir, out soon! As it turned out, I was to move on to @WHO in Geneva on a promotion into the senior ranks of the UN system as Head of Global Partnerships at The Global Fund @GlobalFund
Fun fact: Otunnu and I share the distinction of having been unsuccessful presidential candidates in African countries where politics is, well, you know….😀

Almost no comment on the fact that Andy Burnham is the first Roman Catholic P.M. in UK history
Under The Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829, Mr Burnham is prohibited from advising the King on appointments to the C of E. This will be delegated to a government minister
Rishi Sunak, a Hindu, was not prohibited from advising the King on these matters - one of the quirks of history and the British constitution.
Boris Johnson was baptised into the Catholic faith as an infant but converted to Anglicanism when at Eton.
Tony Blair was an Anglican in office and converted to Catholicism a few months after leaving No. 10.
Andy Burnham is a cradle Catholic and continues to practice his faith. He was educated at Catholic schools, as are his children.
In 2009 he told The Guardian that the three most important things in his life, aside from family, are "Everton FC, the Labour Party and the Catholic church - in that order".
