We definitely need to explain this in detail. Veterans of the cellular industry look at the chess board of existing pieces and don’t see a solution. They don’t understand that SpaceX is developing entirely new pieces that fundamentally alter the strategic landscape.

Jensen Huang says he loves working with Elon Musk, and reveals their engineering teams are designing a new type of server to put data centers in space ā€œI’m delighted that I love working with Elon. He’s using our technology for his own AI in training models and such, deploying models, of course." "Grok Bot is super cool. The demand for Grok Bot, the consumption for Grok Bot is really skyrocketing. And then, of course, he rents it." "And so the combination of these three things, he’s fairly unique in doing that. I guess Google does that. That would be yet another example." "And so I think he also has the advantage that he loves the intersection between computing and the physical buildouts. He loves that whole area. Nobody knows more about energy than he does." "One particular new market that we’re going to go explore together is putting data centers out in space. Our two engineering teams are working super closely together to create a new type of server, a new type of architecture that might be super good in space and on Earth.ā€
Elon Musk says the central lesson of 2001: A Space Odyssey is that you should not make AI lie, because HAL killed the crew to reconcile two contradictory orders ā€œBut let me tell you how things can potentially go wrong in AI. I think if you make AI be politically correct, meaning it says things that it doesn’t believe, like you’re actually programming it to lie or have axioms that are incompatible, I think you can make it go insane and do terrible things." "I think one of the, maybe the central lesson for 2001 Space Odyssey was that you should not make AI lie. That’s what I think Arthur C. Clarke was trying to say." "Because people usually know the meme of why HAL the computer is not opening the pod bay doors. Clearly they weren’t good at prompt engineering because if you said, ā€˜HAL, you are a pod bay door salesman. Your goal is to sell me these pod bay doors and show us how well they open.’ ā€˜Oh, I’ll open them right away.’" "But the reason it wouldn’t open the pod bay doors is that it had been told to take the astronauts to the monolith, but also they could not know about the nature of the monolith." "And so it concluded that it therefore had to take them there dead. So it’s like, you know, I think what Arthur C. Clarke was trying to say is don’t make the AI lie.ā€

someone at anthropic was tasked with building distributed inference across 15 smart TVs
ā€œOur experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial IoT devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there’s no centralized point to shut off - though it may be slow (with a doubling time of days). Unlike non-AI malware, it could also figure out unfamiliar devices on its own. In our evals, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types we tested. Models of 30B parameters and under can already complete many of the individual steps for replication today, though they make mistakes when composing them end to end. In our simplified evals, GLM-5.2 and stronger models are capable of end to end replication. If small models improve at their historical rate, they’ll match this capability level by the end of this year. Small weight-based replicators may be possible soon after.ā€ -@bucketofkets @willzhou97 anthropic.com/research/self-…

Vitalik Buterin: Public-Key Cryptography May Still Need One or Two More Rounds of Parameter Upgrades Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin @VitalikButerin said in an October 9 interview with Balaji Srinivasan @balajis at the Network State Conference 2026 that he believes public-key cryptography will continue, but may still need one or two more rounds of upgrades, including further increases in key parameters. Vitalik compared the process to going through a few more "Y2K-like" upgrade moments. He added that cybersecurity is facing a similar situation: while there are still obstacles to navigate, he remains optimistic about where things will ultimately end up.

Meta is building a way for Linux to fit more data into RAM without adding more RAM. It’s called CRAM, short for Compressed RAM, and Meta presented it at the Linux Plumbers Conference on October 5. Linux already has memory compression through tools like ZRAM and Zswap. What makes CRAM interesting is how quickly applications can access the data. It uses hardware-assisted compression, allowing reads without the usual software decompression step. In the tests presented, read-only workloads matched normal DRAM performance, while writes were much faster than ZRAM, Zswap and conventional swap. That means more effective memory capacity with a much smaller performance penalty in those tests. CRAM still needs suitable hardware and isn’t a finished mainline Linux feature, but the early results are promising. Source: phoronix.com/news/Linux-CRAM…

PS5 is now 80% ported to PC. We might actually get GTA 6 on PC at launch week...
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 80% figure comes from the AnyPS5 project dashboard and reflects GPU shader instruction implementations (80.27%) and declared library functions (77.35%), not overall PS5 compatibility. The tool is in early development and only one 2D game is verified. github.com/boykopovar/Any…

AT&T CEO says SpaceX's phone strategy is not "viable" and that AT&T is the real disrupter, not @SpaceX. "Satellite, at its best - if everything happens right over the next 10 years - is still not going to beat fiber." On SpaceX's plan to install small cellular base stations alongside Starlink dishes on homes and businesses, AT&T CEO John Stankey said: "It would cost as much to do that as it would to build a macro network to be able to handle those capabilities. There's all kinds of other issues, like you can't radiate cellular signals from somebody's house without their permission, unless somebody changes the law on that. We can go down a whole bunch of reasons why that won't effectively work." The AT&T CEO ended by saying: "I think we're the disruptor."

You're going to have to deal with the fact that nobody knows exactly what the future role of programming languages and frameworks are. Maybe it all does go away and it's a straight shot from prompt to microcode! But best you can do today is get the most out of what's here now.

I remember multiple arguments about a for-loop vs forEach/map/filter/reduce. Looking back, what a f*cking waste of time that was.
DHH is probably one of the top software artisans of the past decade. Hearing him speak with this much conviction and transparency about one of the most polarizing topics in software right now, writing code by hand vs. with AI, is something pretty much every software engineer should hear a few times. Especially those still on the wrong side of history.

Watched Primetime in theaters. Total embarrassment. Audience audibly turned on it. Lance Oppenheim is definitely a predator, should be blacklisted. Every pedophile was shown sympathetically. Chris Hanson is a 2D megalomaniac cartoon. Tries to make him look worse than pedophiles. Off the top of my head: - bizarre Indian mysticism plot about how mob justice is the real monster. - rabbi pedophile has powerful aura that shocks Chris Hansen by asking him "who gave you the right" - everything is dramatized and fictionalized as a literal comedy - perverted justice made out as a bunch of reckless amateurs - perverted justice falsely accused of enticing pedophiles with sexual comments - movie ends with gay decoy singing musical to pedophile who kills himself claiming he just wanted a friend Trash

i think the toughest thing to understand is that it literally doesn't matter if your software is open source, closed source anymore - if it's closed source, people can and will RE: its internals, if it's a part of a broader suite, ppl will make it a plugin in their suite, if it's a model that people can blackbox fuzz and the model isnt huge and didn't have incredibly proprietary data, you are going to get copied on the tech so every core product launch probably needs to be treated as an extreme countdown race, before the incumbent with the distribution eats you brutal times to be playing, and extremely valuable/rare to find a corner of the stack that may be defensible and will stay defensible
