INS Sudarshini is in Alexandria on the way home from Lokayan-26. Eight months out from home port. Tarangini & Sudarshini are IMHO the most *beautiful* ships in our navy. Is sail training outdated?
Lokayan-26 left Kochi on 20 January: a 10-month long trans-oceanic expedition under sail. About 22,000 nautical miles, 18 ports, 13 countries. Over 200 Navy & Coast Guard trainees.
A sail training ship, not a frigate on a “presence” deployment.
Easy to call this anachronism. It is not.
You can teach missiles, Combat Management Systems, radar and ECDIS in a classroom. You cannot teach a young officer what a ship does when the wind picks up, the deck is wet & the plan is at the mercy of a rough sea. Sail training compresses that lesson: weather, fatigue, small-team leadership and the ‘unfashionable’ skill of looking at the sea instead of a screen. Sail training builds character.
We will keep building missiles & combat systems. We will also keep sending cadets to sea under sails. Officers who have only ever known a ‘climate-controlled bridge’ are not better officers…just drier ones.
