Great to see @MU_CCFI_Biotech Director @RajVarshney included in a @NatureInd news feature on research into the unique traits found in black peas.
The article outlines how black peas – once a staple of the food systems in Himachal Pradesh, situated on the border of India and Tibet – fell out of favour with farmers for other commercial crops, and is now only grown by a small selection of local farmers.
Researchers at @Stanford University and @ncfindia have found that black peas carry distinct genetic traits that can improve climate change adaptation, and have more protein, fibre and minerals than green peas.
Sequencing efforts suggest that there’s an unrecognised lineage within the pea family, which, as Prof Varshney explains, suggests millennia of selection under Himalayan culture and climate, reinforcing the region’s role as a secondary centre of pea diversity.
Confirming this will require wider genomic sampling, paired with archaeological and cultural evidence, and “If validated, it would underscore the role of Himalayan smallholders in shaping crop diversity, complementing centres of domestication in the Fertile Crescent and Central Asia.”

➡️ India’s Department of Science and Technology introduces a national policy to address research misconduct, including clear guidelines for retractions and corrections. As reported by @NatureInd, this policy aims to improve transparency and accountability in publicly funded research by requiring institutions to have formal mechanisms to investigate and report misconduct.

What lies beneath? Maharashtra’s talavs are holding up a mirror to our climate future 🧭
A new @NatureInd article explores what sediment cores from centuries-old reservoirs are telling us — about forgotten floods, rising climate extremes, and the limits of our ageing water infrastructure.
The study reveals how El Niño years — often associated with drought — have also brought intense, short-lived floods in semi-arid regions. When the land lies bare after long dry spells, it can’t absorb sudden heavy rains. The result? Severe erosion, silt-clogged tanks, and growing uncertainty for water-dependent communities.
Quick fixes like desiltation won’t suffice — especially if we ignore the degraded catchments where the silt is coming from.
As Eshwer Kale, watershed management expert at W-CReS (WOTR Centre for Resilience Studies), points out in the article:
“We need geological assessments. Will water even percolate in these tanks? In low-percolation zones, silt removal may not solve anything. Meanwhile, bare lands are heating up, adding another layer of stress.”
The article brings together insights from global experts — including WOTR — who argue for long-term, landscape-sensitive approaches that blend science, local knowledge, and climate foresight.
Because what’s buried in those tank beds is not just silt. It’s a record of past disasters — and a warning we can’t afford to ignore.
