Well that's it for our 2023 Rapid Assessment Surveys of NNS in marinas and ports around England and Wales. Already some very interesting finds, although we still have rather a lot of sample pots to examine 🔬! @NaturalEngland @NatResWales @MBAEcology Hope to do SW next year.

NNS v Native! On the left Amphibalanus amphitrite (Striped barnacle probably native to tropical Indian Ocean & W Pacific) and on the right Perforatus perforatus (Volcano barnacle). A. amphitrite is less tall with a wider opening and tapered stripes. @NatResWales @NaturalEngland

Botrylloides violaceus (Orange cloak sea squirt) growing on a mussel in a S. Wales marina. The pink brooded larvae are clearly visible in this bright yellow colony. @NatResWales @PaulBraz1er @MBAEcology

NNS upon NNS! An old, 25 cm long, Leathery sea squirt, playing host to a youngster and several other non-native (and native) species. Can you spot any more? @NatResWales @PaulBraz1er @MBAEcology

Our first NNS surveys in full PPE. With the 3 of us clustered around a set of panels we did have a few hard hat collisions! @NatResWales @abports21

We are off surveying for NNS again next week, this time it’s a whistle-stop tour of Welsh marinas and ports, accompanied by Paul Brazier of @NatResWales. I wonder what’s changed since we were last here in 2014? @MBAEcology

During our recent Rapid Assessment Surveys in NW England with Jan Maclennan @NaturalEngland we saw some very dense settlement of Ficopomatus enigmaticus (Trumpet tube-worm or Coral worm as it's known locally). Just wait til it grows up!

We were re-visiting marinas in NE England a few weeks ago with Pete Welby @NaturalEngland and can definitively state that Schizoporella japonica (Orange-ripple bryozoan) has not gone away, since we were last there in 2016!

Spent last 3 days in E Anglia with Chris Ashelby of@APEM_Ltd hunting for NNS as part of our current re-surveys of English marinas. Today - first E coast record of Watersipora subatra (Red ripple bryozoan) we are aware of. @NaturalEngland @CefasGovUK

Its always enjoyable sharing our work on NNS with other enthusiasts! and we got away from our desks for a few hours, and avoided the rain - win win win! @MBAEcology @DevonLNP
On our hunt for non-native species today we found carpet sea squirt, orange-striped anemone, ruby bryozoan and many others at a marina in Plymouth. Thanks Chris and John at @thembauk for a great day! #NonNativeSpecies #InvasiveSpecies plymsea.ac.uk/id/eprint/9076…

I know it not an NNS, but I was thrilled today to see for the first time the male reproductive structures of the wonderfully iridescent seaweed Chondria coerulescens @Macroalgae_

Lots of Devil’s tongue weed (Grateloupia turuturu) at Beggar’s Island on the R. Lynher today. All sizes from a few cm to 1.65 m, the longest I’ve seen on a natural shore. @Macroalgae_ @WemburyMarine @DevonLNP
