PUBLIC HEALTH IS ALL OF US --✨NEW episode drop: ✋Stopping an Outbreak Before it Starts 🚨 Outbreaks of infectious diseases can be devastating for a community. An infectious disease can spread quickly, especially when a community lacks the protection of vaccines for a particular disease. Some recent examples include the new strain of ebola virus that spread very quickly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the recent outbreak of dengue fever in Florida. 🎤 We interview with Sara McCall, the Communicable Disease Nursing Supervisor about a case of tuberculosis, also known as TB, in a Multnomah County middle school in 2025. 🚭 Did you know? A teenager who starts vaping - even occasionally - can get addicted very quickly. In young people, 5mg of nicotine a day is enough to establish a nicotine addiction – about the amount of nicotine in one-quarter of an e-cigarette pod. 👥 Here’s a resource to help prepare you for the conversations with your child about tobacco and nicotine use: lung.org/quit-smoking/helpin… 📱If you or someone you know is ready for help to quit vaping or using other tobacco and nicotine products text VAPEFREEOR to 88709 for help to start your quit journey with EX program.

🧊 As the summer cools down, respiratory illness season heats up! ⬆️ 😷 Covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands frequently and wearing a mask in crowds or close contact with others can help prevent sickness. 💉The flu and RSV vaccines reduce the risk of illness or lessen symptoms. They also protect our most vulnerable citizens from serious illness including infants, young children, pregnant people, older adults, and folks with chronic health conditions. Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older. Get the RSV vaccine: ✅ If you are pregnant at 32 – 36 weeks to protect your baby ✅ If you’re 75+ and haven’t gotten it yet or 50 – 74 and have risk factors for serious illness If you have a baby under 8 months or a baby 8 – 19 months with risk factors for serious illness, they should get the RSV monoclonal antibody treatment to protect them. ✅ Ask your doctor for details or call 2-1-1.

🏠 As a Health Department, we know that housing is healthcare. 🛏️ ⚕️Stable housing is a fundamental social determinant of health. Without a safe place to call home, managing chronic illnesses, maintaining proper nutrition, getting quality sleep, and accessing regular medical care becomes incredibly difficult. Experiencing houselessness significantly increases the risk of: ☀️ ❄️ Extreme weather-related illnesses (heatstroke and hypothermia) 🦠 Infectious diseases and delayed wound healing 🧠 Severe mental health challenges and substance use disorders 📉 Reduced life expectancy 🚐 We are dedicated to bridging the gap between housing and healthcare. Through our mobile health clinics, street outreach teams, mental health services, partnerships with local shelters and community organizations, we work daily to bring compassionate, stigma-free care directly to those who need it most. 🇺🇲 Veterans remain disproportionately affected by housing vulnerability. The transition from military to civilian life can present steep challenges, from mental health struggles like PTSD to sudden economic instability. True patriotism means ensuring that those who put their lives on the line for our security have a secure, dignified place to live when they return.

🌻 September 9th & 10th marked a milestone for the NW Indigenous Food Sovereignty Alliance. 🌽 Portland's first Indigenous Food Summit brought together nearly 300 local community members, and Native people from across the country to celebrate two days of traditional foods, medicines, and sovereignty. Beginning with a pre-summit growers safety certification training, the gathering included hands-on workshops ranging from soil health to cooking with traditional foods, a free Native plant giveaway, shared meals and samples prepared by indigenous chefs, and a Native marketplace. 🌅 The summit created space for connection, collaboration, and joy. With over 35 workshops, the summit demonstrated NIFSA’s original vision for the gathering, that food sovereignty is not achieved through a single food distribution, training, or garden. A just food system is built through relationships with the land, water, and each other. Photo credit: Pedro Parra (Maya Yucateco)

🔈‼️ Stay Covered, Stay Healthy: Upcoming Changes to Medicaid and OHP 🗓️ Federal Medicaid and Oregon Health Plan (OHP) rule changes are taking effect in 2027 under House Bill H.R.1. Patients have started receiving letters from the Oregon Health Authority regarding these plan updates. ➡️ Two key requirements will affect most adults: Six-Month Renewals: Adult patients must renew their OHP insurance every six months to maintain coverage. Work & Volunteer Reporting: Most adults will need to share information regarding their work and volunteer activities. 📞 Our health center is committed to helping patients understand their options and navigate these changes seamlessly. If you have any questions, please call 503-988-5270 or visit healthcenter.multco.us/HR1
